This was the first race of the prototypes built by Porsche which usually attribute their success in sports car market. This example is the first of two prototypes built 550 and ran (and apparently the only one to survive) - After a year of development starting in 1952, and winning its initial release in 1953 (this car is actually a removable hardtop - running with or without).

In 1953 the two Porsche 550 Prototypes 550-01 and 550-02 ran the 24 hours of Le Mans exchange intervals but for the rest running almost side-by-side, crossing the line in basically the same interval from which they started the race . The victory was awarded to Le Mans scoring officials 550-02. The end of the season brought the cars to Mexico where he raced in 1954 La Carrera Panamericana

The vagaries of time have swallowed up many stories from our collective pasts and the meandering tale of Germany’s racing color is just such a lost legend. Completely unique amongst the ranks of nations, Germany is the only country to have two international racing colors it’s racers can choose from. It is the story to which we now turn in our exploration of national racing colors.

When the racing colors for the every country were first decided with the advent of the Gordon Bennett Cup, Germany was among the first four to be assigned. White was their chosen hue and so it remained for 32 years of racing and victories. Then something happened that is disputed and today verges on legend.
