Bob, I'm loving the Riley, Is the DeHavilland engine aircraft derived? nicely installed. Is that some kind of air show? Thanks for the pics. Looks like a nice day.

Cheers Richard

Sad day, actually - the funeral of a very good friend and a legend in the aviation
scene here in New Zealand----Max Clear
The ceremony was held at his home airstrip facility--big crowd.
I dont know who did the Riley, but I expect it to feature in a local auto magazine
sometime.
The engine is a 130 h.p. D.H. Gypsy Major, usually mounted the other way up in a Tiger Moth ,or an Auster aicraft.

US-Space Plane Systems - Spin-Offs

US-Space Plane Systems - Technology

Quote:
Simply put, Lifting Body aircraft generate lift for sustained flight from the shape of their bodies, thus eliminating the need for wings. Lifting body technology in the United States began to be developed in the early sixties by a small group of engineers in California. Dr. Alfred J Eggers began studies on alternative types of space craft and re-entry methods for returning to the ground from orbit. Dr. Eggers believed that a blunted cone was the most stable shape for this purpose. However, the need arose for the cone to be some what maneuverable during the re-entry procedure. Therefore, a shape that sports a significant amount of lift would be required. Dr. Eggers suggested the cone be split in half. This shape became known as "the blunted half cone" and the lifting body aircraft was born.

During its two and one half year test period this remarkable aircraft has perform numerous runway takoffs and landings, stall recovery, aerobatic manuvers and water landings. Its jet fighter performance has paved the way for even more advanced lifting body crafts to be built by USSPS in the near future........
I still say it's built upside down.

That is a very interesting design, could it work with a prop or does it need to use a jet engine? I am thinking this could be the answer to solve the problem of making a flying car that would be practical. The shape is MUCH more car like. One of the biggest issues with making a flying car is what do you do with the wings when driving?

I think it's upside down for a car too.

The green template above represents the perfect aerodynamic shape for a car. It has been laid over the sunrise photo (flipped).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_Edwards_(pilot)

Glen Edwards was flying the opposite of the lifting body- the flying wing. One is all fuselage, the other is all wing. It just goes to show that the entire plane is part of the lift and stability equation.
