I went out in a RIB to watch these guys test in Dubai many years ago, Class 1 offshore, it went past our boat doing 175 mph, had two Lamborghini V12 engines.

Here's a pic (1966) with me in it when I was part of the support crew for a friend's drag boat. It was a Sanger hull w/ a blown Chrysler, hemi. That day a guy in a flat bottom went airborn right at 100 mph. Fun times and the boats were awesome.

I was fortunate enough to grow up just east of Seattle during the glory days of Unlimited Hydroplane racing. We would ride our bikes from the eastside, across Mercer Island, and on down to the Stan Sayers pits to watch the racing. Allison, RR Merlin and Griffon V-12 WWII fighter engines. My favorite was always the Pride of Pay'n'Pak:



When we were't watching those, there were the limited boats and drag boats on Greenlake, right in the heart of Seattle. Those were the days:

We must have been neighbors Jeff... I grew up in Lake Hills (Boeing dad), once we started hearing the hydros starting to qualify during Seafair we'd furiously start making plywood hydros to tow behind our stingrays. Cards in the spokes, etc.

Spent time watching the Green Lake races and Sammamish Slough races too. Best time was Seafair though, from the shore or by boat.

Hah, yes, I grew up in Lake Hills. Just southeast of the old Crossroads shopping mall, near the Unity Church on 164th and 4th. And yes, the day we heard the hydros on Lake Washington, we would start pleading with our dad to go. From about 12 years old on, I had permission to ride over on Saturday and Sunday with the "big kids" of the neighborhood. Admission was free in those days.

I actually ran the Sammamish Slough race one year in a friend's kneel-down hydro. It had a McCullough chainsaw motor grafted onto some trolling motor lower unit. I think I was maybe 13-14 years old. They banned the race a year or so after that.

I hear it is back now. I might have to go check it out.

running a drag boat can get pretty expensive.
In 1985/6 I spent about $30k just on engines and parts for the boat and IIRC I was making $17 an hour at the time.
The maths don't work.

Never understood the boat-racing thing.
Instead of using a precise learned skill at it's fullest potential..
The driver just has his spine pounded short, and keeps literally tossing a coin over and over just to see if that next wave or gust of air is going to kill him.
That seems more like random luck than skill to me.

I used to go down to Mission Bay in San Diego and watch Miss Budweiser run (my uncle was a personal sponsor through his substantial consumption of Bud). If I remember they could swap a new Merlin engine in less than 15 minutes.

The second generation Midget II was introduced as a concept at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show and came available with 2 seats....................

They are available in one seater or 2 seater.................
