The beginning of race day in Sebring, 1965 for the world famous 12 Hours Sebring began like just about any other typical March morning. Around 4 PM, the weather took a turn for the worse and foul weather started to threaten the drivers, cars and roughly 60,000 fans. Then at about 5:25 PM, the rain Gods unleashed a rain storm of almost biblical proportion, flooding the pits, race track, drivers reporting water in their cockpits up to their elbows.... This rain storm & race has been talked about ever since....but todays image pays homage & tribute to the fans who wouldn't quit & go home, or seek shelter.
The image was taken in the pits & is the # 67 Triumph Spitfire running in the GT1.3 class & driven by Ed Barker, Duane Feuerhelm, & Mike Rothchild. Amazing enough that they were able to complete the race & finish 33 laps behind the winning drivers Jim Hall & Hap Sharp in a Chaparral 2A, BUT, more amazing, is in the background are the amount of crazed hard core race fans Sebring has been known for decades.

And the Regal diesels were smog exempt. Since the diesel engines were not known to be great, they often got transplants which the DMV had to inspect later on.

When I was young my mom had an 87 with red velour. It was a good car. She didnt get a grand national because they only came in black and cost quite a bit more. When I took my driving test in it was on its last legs. Probably carboned up from all the smog crap on it. As soon as I passed and we got home we tore out the engine and put a crate 350/ 350 trans in it and drove it another 5 years or so. It was pretty fast and fun with that engine it I just liked the sound. We sold it and got an audi a4 when the gas prices went up and the rear drive was no good for the snow and hills here anyway. We sold it around 06 for $950. and the guy was goig to use it for drag racing.

Today, September 17, is Drive Your 356 Day.

Anyone else here drive their 356 today?

In observance of this special day we took my '56 coupe for a 30 mile drive. I also got my Speedster out of deep storage. I haven't seen it since I put it away a year ago. Unwrapping it was like opening a Christmas gift. Sadly, the carburetors are in Arizona being rebuilt so I only drove it in the sense that I steered and used the brakes while Vicki pull us up to the shop with the golf cart.

Since I was moving things around in the barn anyway, I dragged the rest of my junk out for some family photos.
