This is quite sad. I spoke to someone at work who said that the woman driving the SUV was in bumper to bumper traffic and went over the tracks. The barrier came down while she was stopped. She got out of her car and tried to raise the gate. Then she went back into her car and tried to maneuver forward rather than try to break thru the wooden barrier behind her (that someone was screaming to her to do). Then the train hit her causing the SUV to blow up. Killed her and 5 passengers on the train.

Very sad indeed, because there are multiple reasons it didn't need to happen.

I'm absolutely certain that the South Carolina Driver's Handbook that I read cover to cover when I was 14 said that you should never drive across the tracks unless there is plenty of room for your vehicle on the other side of the tracks.

Common sense says the same thing.

Raise the gate by hand? Come on.

I would bet that by the time she thought it would be a good idea to get back in her vehicle and move it, she could hear the engineer blowing the horn like crazy.

Yeah, hindsight is always 20/20... not picking on this woman, but just wondering how could anyone be that stupid...

This is consistent with the information I had heard from someone who lives in the town. It appears that she was more concerned with the damage to her car than the significance of the barrier coming down (ie. a train is coming). Sad, but probably the confusion of the situation kept her from thinking about what her priorities should be and how dire her situation was.
