33rd and Brighton this morning. Still there. Quite a sight. An unknown void under the outrigger.

Lots of odd in the picture of the crane collapse.... It looks like the lowboy it was transported on is still in place, but the horse is gone....and then there is the outrigger under the boom that looks like it punched a nice clean hole in the ground.. Un-compacted fill? Unknown underground structure?

Unknown underground tank of some sort. The lowboy is part of the rig as the boom is still long enough when retracted that it's needed for support.
2 more 155 ton cranes now on site to lift it. My guess is they will have to cut the boom off as it's no longer retractable. More pics tomorrow.

Crap happens some times. You can pad up the riggers, but you never know when the soil under the pavement is compromised. I know a sign guy who got to a job site just in time to see one of his 100' sign cranes fall after an outrigger punched through the pavement into a sinkhole underneath. He said the boom was fine when it hit the ground, but it kinked every segment as it bounced!

Left figure: Very little is known about this intriguing model save for the fact that it was found somewhere in the Ukraine and that it can probably be dated to the period between 3950 and 3650 BC (CUCUTENI TRYPILLIA, Cat. no. U-102, 263). Right: figure: A two-wheeled cart made around the turn of the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC from Pakistan.

Just picked up these two yesterday, now I just have to remove all the rail stuff and get down to the Unimogs. Should be great off road work rigs for someone! Hint. Hint!!

Yea, I guess they don't salt railroad tracks.

Friday Fun Fact #8 ... Believe it or not, putting salt on a railroad track in Alabama was once punishable by death. Why you ask? Salt attracts cattle. Cattle on railroad tracks can cause a fatal derailment and kill crew and passengers.

Some of the most enthusiastic Unimog owners are – railroad companies. Equipped with couplers, Unimogs can move boxcars around railroad tracks. At Japan’s Shinkansen bullet train, the Unimog does shunting duty. In some Asian countries, Unimogs are used as switch engines.
