It is a personal choice. Government has no business meddling in personal rights, even if that right or choice happens to be detrimental to one's health.
What's next? Outlawing soda? How about coffee, that makes you jittery. Fried foods should be outlawed, alcohol is a definite no no.
We must outlaw all these things! Then the government will supply us with only what we need, soylent green comes to mind. Sheeesh. Live your life the way you want and I'll do the same. OK?

Eventually I will see enough of those dirty hippy commercials where the dirty hippy kids run around the city with their dirty hippy megaphones blabbing about how tobacco is satan. It will make me start smoking. Just because I hate those bastards so much. They are the same ones making videos on youTube about 9/11 being a conspiracy. Damn dirty hippies.

Vote Rammstein.

If you smoke, it's your choice ... we all know the game.

But banning ads and what not because it is dangerous is very 1 sided.

Like my beef with "manholde" covers.

If you're going to do it, then do it properly.

Geez, are you saying those Bling, Bling shoot you dead sukka movies, videos and what not make for better role models than a gun-slinger standing up for some poor smuck who didn't have to balls to do it himself?

I'm sorry, I'd rather have the gun-slinger with cigarrette in mouth over Rap Snopey Drey kewl Daddi Puffy what's his name spouting stuff about cash, gals and authority!

lolo, I do like rap music though

lolo, I'm old school but that's a different topic

Sorry, I wasn't really targetting anybody but rather just picked up this line while reading very quickly.

Quote:
No child has ever made the choice to start smoking because it smells good. Kids pick it up because they see the cool hero of a movie having a smoke after he saves the day. They see Rick having a puff before hopping on that cool ass bike and riding off into the sunset. They pick it up because WE tell them it's cool.
I then turned that thought into a relation to what is seen on TV in general. Compared the 2.

Of course, I took great liberty with the orignal post

They keep the habit on their own of course (i'll never deny the pleasures of a smoke break after a hard day-just glad i managed to quit).

Claiming that smoking is a personal choice and is noone elses business is akin to claiming that street racing is the same. It's an unbelievably ignorant stance and shows a total lack of compassion for your fellow man.

What might all that money going to lung cancer research be doing if we didn't have tobacco products in our market? How's about spending a few of those bucks looking for answers to colon cancer, breast cancer, autism, etc?

This topic comes up every so often on PPOT and I never fail to be stunned by the 'screw my neighbor and his kids' attitude that so many show. How some of you can not see the obvious fact that we are passing this curse onto our descendents by our failure to stamp it out is beyond me.
Would you please come out, and teach me how to live my life? I'm not capable of making my own decisions, then taking responsibility for my actions.

Since when is the government my nanny? I chose to start smoking by my own accord, and later struggled through quitting. Nobody made me start, it was MY CHOICE. You can make a similar argument for the following: coffee, beer, liquor, flying, skydiving, driving, biking, motorcycles, athletics, violent TV, the internet, and basically everything else in life.

But, but, but.....just think about all the money spent to make cars safer! Imagine how we could better use that money! Think about the children! Please........

I think your personal liberties end when they begin to effect my personal liberties. Restrictions on where and when are OK if they prove to be valuable in protect another's liberty, like second hand smoke.

You health is yours, you making the choice makes all the difference. It comes down between you and your family.

I agree with you there Doug, you shouldn't have the right to push your decision to smoke onto others through second hand smoke.

I'm on my third day of trying to quit (for about the 5th time) and I'm shaky right now. For those of you who think it's choice, your right, right up until the time your hooked. Let's get real it is addicting, and VERY hard to quit.

As far as the initiatives mentioned in the first post Canada has done all of these, it almost cost us some great car racing teams that were sponsored by smoke Companies. As far as tax, a pack (25) of smokes costs about $12 here, yet people still buy them. I see more bums (and even regular people) picking butts out of common ashtrays than I have ever before in my life.

For those who have never smoked great work! I know it's bad, I wish I'd never started, but quiting is a beyotch.

For all the money they take in from smoking my recommendation would be make all forms of quit smoking methods free (paid for by the government) for those who wish to quit. Yes long term it's cheaper to spend all the money to try to quit with gum, patches, pills, acupuncture, etc., but anyone trying to quit isn't thinking long term about their habit, they are trying one day at a time, and when you have to spend a lot to quit that doesn't help.

I too have been one of those who always considered others when smoking, and kept it away from non-smokers, but I think they have gone a little over-board with thinking banning smoking everywhere will stop that. If you choose to go to a "smoking bar" if they had one, that should be allowed.

keep the faith....

Hey berettafan,
no probs

What I'm thinking here is where is one's rights greater than anothers?

I think it's Calabasas, CA that has zoned it completely to be NON-smoking including your own property and house. I was like WTF !!!!

Do I have to move because somebody else thinks its bad ???? If I owned property there I'd be very pisssssssst off.

Now, I do agree with that smoking should be done in specified zones. I support that 100%. However, making it so that it's 100% impossible ... that is wrong IMO.

What would you think if I came up with some poopypoop like:
my engine is only a 3.0 non-turbo so all engines larger than mine should be illegal !!!
I don't think that would fly very well.

I for one think that the government should deal with larger issues like cleaning the air in LA.
Safer, cleaner drinking water. Or what about those DNA altered food products ...

However much I believe that it is a nasty habit .... Why is it that smoking gets hit the hardest?

Bob James/Stealthn

I'm with you, I've been trying to quit now for about 6 weeks. I'm on the patch, and it certainly takes the edge off. My jaw muscles are now pumped from chewing gum. Hang in there. I couldn't believe the cost of the patches! A two week fix is about $40! Smokes here are about $4 for a 20 pack. When I traveled to Vancouver, I always brought a few extra packs from the States. My first trip since going on the quitting route is back to Vancouver this coming Monday. I would typically buy a Cuban while there and smoke it and walk around. This trip I'm going to try real hard not to. Good luck. Oh, and if the gubmit really wanted to help people quit, I agree, they or your insurance carrier would pay for the patches/gum, but apparently they don't.

I quit cold turkey 8 years ago, one of the more challenging things I've done in my life.

Proof positive that NOBODY can prove serious harm from second hand smoke:
Ready?

A handful of shrewd ambulance chasers could file suit on behalf of casino workers & own LV & Atlantic City, if, they could prove it!
