I think you guys got pwd72s wrong, he was just suggesting what an old fighter pilot may have - this is just the type of person who may have bought a 911s new and kept it for years, always maintaining his beauty - similiar to "Hester's" first owner.

Anyway, what a great post, thanks for sharing and I hope I am alive to be int he same position in years to come

Captain said the Cayman was his dad's FIRST Porsche. If his first Porsche was purchased in 1972, it probably would have been a 911S. Buying a brand new Porsche was a great choice, as people who have the old 911s tend to not drive them much (and that would miss the point of it all) -- just ask pwd72s, who rarely drove his car.

Uh, no. You must be new around here(?) PWD, while definitely an enthusiast at one time is now just a carmudgeon with a burning hard-on for modern Porsches. Probably modern anythings. As though Porsche could still build skinny-wheel air-cooled 200 hp cars in the 21st century, yeah sure. That makes sense.

There was absolutely nothing sentimental about the designers of our cars. They were obsessed engineers who were competitive beyond belief, building weird sports cars that won races. Nothing has changed, other than the cars are a magnitude higher performance in keeping with the times. Check out PWD's signature line if you don't believe my statement above. And if you ever meet him, ask him why even the great engineers at Porsche started liquid-cooling the race cars back in the early '70s.

Rob that is SUPER cool, I'll bet you had some influence on the type of car he purchased though? One way or another.

When I saw the title of the thread I figured it would be a link to some far off distant news story; but was very impressed to see it was actually your father. You should be very proud of him.

I can remember my grandpa driving at 86, which was about 9 years ago. I would have to back his car out of my driveway and point it in the right direction for him My Aunt finally put her foot down and had his Dr pull his license; poor guy, but he loved to drive.

My Father was still driving his Jaguar at age 85 when he passed.

It's not only great that he's a "young" enough 86 to drive a new Cayman, but he's also financially grounded enough to afford one. With a reverse mortgage, meager pension, and monthly SS check, my folks get by, but that's about it. And they're doing better than most.

Congrats. We should all try to follow in his footsteps.

Thats awesome! Tell your dad about this guy. He is a PCA member and has a 944. His car number each year changes with his age. This year his car # is 90.

I met him for the 1st time when his car number was 86 and he was at the bay bottom crawl. He can drive too!! His times are right there with the rest of the 944's with the young un's driving them.

Besides, the Bay Bottom Crawl is not for the weak of heart and for him to be putting down hot times at that event is a testimony to how young at heart he is.

I love hearing about old guys driving sports cars and taking them to the track even! Paul Newman (in his 70s!) competing in the Daytona 24 hours is my inspiration. I hope I am still with-it enough in my advanced years.

I agree with speeder. If he is not b!tching and moaning about selling his longhood he is trying to make all those that don't own an early 911 feel that they are not true enthusiasts.
