I believe that James Bond in John Gardner's first book (after the death of the late Ian Fleming) drove a BMW M1. That alone puts it into "uber cool" territory.

Beautiful cars. I find them to be somewhat similar to the 8-series in styling, a little bit like Lotus too. To be honest, I'd LOVE to pick up an 850 (or an M1, if I had the chance) at some point. Unfortunately the wife has put a moratorium on any new vehicles for me (and yes, I haven't overlooked the fact she used the word "vehicles", which does not technically include watercraft or aircraft - I'll cross that bridge later).

That was one of my first "dream cars" as a kid, I love 'em!

With only 400 or so of them made in 80/81 or so, and with them never being intended to be a full on production car, I'd imagine that parts availability is really tough, though. A lot of the interior bits are standard parts, but I think a lot of the engine parts are M1 only, and things like the windshield, body, suspension, brakes, etc., I wonder.

I'm a big BMW fan, and that car was so outrageous for BMW to come out with. At the time, BMW was still a very conservative company, and the M1 was nuts!

What I most remember about the M1 was how expensive it was here in the US in 1980.

They were never officially sold in the US, but companies brought quite a few over and federalized them.

Sticker price: $115,000!

Remember, this was 1980. You could buy several houses for $115K back then.

URY, that is one of my all time favorite pics. Lots of debate over how real it is, but it still saw some time as my desktop.

Hey Jeff, wanna' make your 951 look reliable? Buy an 850. I've been told by many people that they cost a fortune to keep running. Very cool cars though.

Yea, I've heard that too. They are absolutely drop-dead gorgeous automobiles though. Every time I see one I have to stare. Absolutely lovely design.

There's a black one in Wichita with deep dish wheels and an aftermarket exhaust. Gorgeous car, and the sound is pure sex.

On a related note, it seems that if you are buying a collector car, you wouldn't want one that has been customized.

For a museum, I think the strips are fine, but for a driver, not so much.

I remember seeing one up close in the early 80's at a high end shop in Houston. They're great looking in person and I remember the incredible performance considering they have the same size tires as a stock 911SC of the same same period. They also look pretty easy to work on with the straight six engine.
