I'll start really worrying when they change the law to allow evidence found from blanket, overflight, warrantless searches into court. Until then nothing they find can be used to arrest, get a warrant or prosecute. And the gov't. could always conduct all the illegal surveillance they wanted. Doesn't help them any if they can't use it to prosecute.

SORRY BUT ANYTHING IN PLAIN SIGHT IS LEGAL UNDER CURRENT LAW
NO NEED FOR A WARRANT TO USE SPY SATS AIRCRAFT OR CHOPPERS

example they use heat data from infrared devices to bust indoor pot farms
while not in ''plain sight'' it is used daily and allowed under our current laws

You guys REALLY think it's "just fine" to hand the government more control over our lives? You guys REALLY think there's no chance they'll exploit that?

Who's handing it to them? They have the power whether it's legal or not. Whatcha gonna do? Shoot them down? If Congress and the POTUS banned it tomorrow, would that mean they no longer could ever do it? No, it just means it'd be illegal. Authorities never break the law, right?

Sort of like complaining about wiretaps. The gov't. has the technical capability to conduct them, with or without a warrant. You can't stop that. But at least you know they can't use anything against you in court if obtained illegally. We still have some recourse in the law, not in technical capability.

Good! Let them waste their time and money. Even the illegal stuff I do (in theory), they'd not be able to detect by means that would allow them to prosecute me. Somewhere in our gov't. there must be one or two people who care about catching real criminals and not looking for minor stuff to pin on the little people.

No, it's more profitable to go after the "little people".

There's very little money to be made in pursuing real criminals.

Wait until they figure out they can use these things for permanent aerial speed law and red-light camera enforcement. And jaywalking. And littering. And ripping those tags off your mattresses. And using aerosol cans other than in a manner prescribed by law. And whatever else they want in order to raise revenue.

I wouldn't worry too much about spy planes and satellites invading our privacy because the instrument of citizen control is already right in our pockets. Who DOESN'T have a cell phone these days?
In the very near future, your cell phone will be the one single device required to do EVERYTHING. It's already started here in the Bay Area. You can now "load" your cell phone with credits which will allow you to ride BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). Paying for bridge tolls and all public transit with your phone is next. Then it'll be concert tickets, groceries, gas, airline tickets, bar tabs, clothes and anything else you buy. Almost everything you do...everything you buy...everywhere you go....everyone you talk to will be stored and be accessible to those with a desire to know such things. Companies who want to sell you stuff will have a field day with this data. Your location can be pinpointed anywhere on the planet and your traveling and spending habits will be as easily charted as your web surfing is today. Let's say you get a speeding ticket one day. Maybe part of your punishment will be restricted access to bridges, certain toll roads or municipal parking lots....all easily arranged by simply sending a signal to your phone. Control of your cell phone will mean control of YOU.

rcooled, that's essentially how things are in Japan. Of course, if you don't use those features it will mean that others can't abuse them. Interesting point though. Many phones can now have the microphone remotely enabled, essentially a bug in your pocket. There were several recent cases in which the government got a court order to do exactly that, just like a wiretap.

They can't if you have it powered off. That's how mine is a lot of the time.

How many bars do you get with that approach? If they ever listened into my phone, they'd be bored to tears within 5 minues.

Actually, the new ones can be turned on remotely, and you'd never even know it. Just the microphone can be activated. You have to physically remove the battery to prevent it being remotely powered on.

The feds took down some mobsters using this little tactic about a year ago, maybe. I'll do a google and post a link if i can find it.

Edit: Well, that took exactly 5 seconds to find:

Interesting. . .

I shut mine off a lot just to (1) save the battery and (2) not be bothered.
