I just priced a trunk lid for my 73 2002: $850
A set of used door panels: $400 ! Hell, appbiz can sell me 4 RS door panels for that price !
BMW may sell old parts but sometimes I wish they wouldn't bother and aftermarket would take over instead, it'd be cheaper ! Mine:

Aww, c'mon. Who goes to the dealer to purchase doors & hoods? Of course you're going to pay a king's ransom. I'm talking about basic stuff...brake parts, clamps, nuts/bolts, etc. With Porsche, it's either NLA or $$$ (or the counter-guy doesn't want to be bothered).

Nope, mobile tradition, either via maximilian or list members who can buy from the same source... Find me a NOS hood or trunk lid for <$850 and I'll be ecstatic ;-) Dashes too are just as cracked and impossible to find for decent money... and $400+ for a foor panel ????

As far as brakes, nuts and bolts, I have equal luck finding stuff for the Porsche and Bimmer... The big difference is that you can buy a tranny or motor for a song, but then again you should, it's not exactly a powerhouse ;-) Fun car though !

Small world. I've been considering getting back into 2002s again myself. However, I keep reminding myself why I switched to 911s - 2002 parts are just as expensive, if not more so, than 911 parts. Once you get past the entry fee, there's no cost advantage at all. As I recall, parts like dashboards (all pre 76 crack at the first hint of sunlight) bumper accordians, weather seals, square grills, etc are nla or very expensive. Now I see that a decent 2002 also will set you back darn near 5 figures although bargains can still be had.

Some clarification - 76 2002s are common - I've had 3. I'm guessing Californa smog issue. Rust on a 2002 is common everywhere, but often considered terminal if on the shock towers. The rockers and front fender bottoms are particularly bad on 2002s Rear fender lips as well. Pre 73s have pita seat belts - no inertia reels. I would avoid those for that reason alone. They are no easier to work on than a 911 contemporary imo. They get lousy mileage for a 4 banger. Interior bits are $$$ and you will need interior bits. I laughed at the understeer comment. He's right - they will plow through turns all day. It's near impossible to get a 2002 suspension neutral. That said, they still handle nicely - if you like understeer.

Overall cool cars. I may still get one if the right car comes along. That will make 2002 number 10 for me.
