Looking to buy a Pre-76 BMW 2002 Driver

I know, this is an odd place to post this, but PPOT gets a ton of traffic and I am hoping I can find a lead on a car :D

My Jetta DD got smooshed, so I am looking for a pre-76 BMW 2002 for a driver. No Tii, just a regular model with a 4 speed and in decent shape. I am in SoCal, so if you know anyone that is selling one, please let me know.

Thanks!

You're replacing a Jetta with a 2002 for a DD? Do you care about a/c? I'm seriously considering selling my 330i, since I drive it so rarely. I'd much rather have another 2002, though it would probably sit and collect dust like my 993 does. I ride the GS everywhere here.

It's funny. I retrofit the Jetta's AC with 134 and last summer was my first with it in 8 years. It was nice, but it's not that big of a deal for me. The wife's broom has A/C for her and the kiddies.

In one month the GS will be parked..

AC is nice to have.

Not an 02, but kind of in the same spirit - my 5 speed 535i(s)! Cold AC, a great daily driver. Let me know if you're interested!

'72 ~ earlier is preferred. Round taillights are more collectible:

One of my next projects will be to drop an "M" motor in a 2002.

Here's a clean one in Victorville: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Fun-Sporty-1972-BMW-2002-CA-Car-with-Low-Reserve_W0QQitemZ150242318753QQihZ005QQcategoryZ42 601QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I saw the one in Victorville. Bummer that it's a dealer, which will add to the sales tax :(

It was on eBay before and failed to meet reserve. I am watching it :D

I love E28s and yours is very nice! I may need to seriously consider it.

What kind of mileage does it get? You can PM me if you have more info.

That'd be very kind of you Wayne.

Hmmm. There's a 2002 parked down the street. It seems to sit there in front of an apt bldg all the time. As in, just about every time I pass by. License plate reads "1971 BMW" IIRC. I'll see if it's for sale.

Thanks Noah. Where abouts is that?

100% agree, I'm a round taillight fan all the way. With that said I think I would rather have a '74-'75 for a daily driver. The little bumpers on the early cars are like tin foil but the big (and ugly) ones can take a hit and leave little to no body damage.

KaptKaos 05-04-2008 09:53 PM

Given my budget, I am likely looking at a later car, but who knows, I might get lucky!

Awesome Noah. Thanks for the help.

Bump!

dan79brooklyn 05-06-2008 09:52 AM

Fun cars...I used to have a 1976 2002.

Not nearly as reliable or as well built as a 911. I guess you want a pre 76 for smog reasons?

I would think there are a lot of good ones in LA...Rust is the enemy of these cars.

Let us know what you find.

scottmandue 05-06-2008 09:57 AM

There is a 1600 for sale in San Pedro... the paint has a lot of patina but I see it running around town so I presume it runs. Let me know if you want me to stop and get the phone number for you.

Scott

I believe '76 was the last year of production. '75 was last year for the US...?

I beg to differ. My 1602 (with a 2002 motor) was built like a (little) tank, ran like a watch and required little maintenance (in four years of ownership, I only had to replace the MC). It was lowered and handled like a go-cart. You couldn't bring the ass-end around if you tried.

Working on the motor was a pleasant experience as there is plenty of room under the cowl. The only common rust issues are @ the tops of the shock towers.

Furthermore, BMW still supports their vintage vehicles, so many, many parts are still available on-line and/or through the dealerships. When I go to Porsche inquiring about parts for my '79 & '71, I get the "sucking on a dog-doo flavored Lifesaver" look from the counter guy...
