I think we've hit a new low........ There's so many things that can be said, but Snowman has already dug his own grave and filled it with concrete. I know one thing, most of these "cavemen" are probably far happier than he seems to be.

Exactly. We kill ourselves for a lifetime at work, just to have stuff. If that stuff were not available, or we weren't aware of the existence of said stuff, would we really be worse off? I work for a house, car, etc but don't really derive any true happiness from them. Someone in the middle of the jungle can have a family that makes them happy, just like I do.

For example I go to Hawaii, I meet travelers there that have saved and this is the big moment in their life.
Then I look and there are some locals living on the beach, eating fish they catch out of the ocean, chicken that run wild, fruit that grows in the jungle, selling a little weed that also grows in the jungle for a some pocket change. Who in that picture is better off?

We are very efficient, clean people. The carbon footprint is bogus, a red herring. Even 2000 years ago the Romans lived, on an evolutionary scale 30,000 years, better than much of the rest of the world and those same people today. Their per person impact on the environment was much greater than anyone today. Finally...What is narrow minded about asking a question about a simple fact? I made no attempt to state any reason as to why those people live the way they do, but I did ask the question WHY do they even exist in todays world? Your statement is simply a slam directed at me personally. It has no basis and adds nothing to answer a obvious question. If someone from outer space came here it would be very reasonable for him to ask Why is so much of the world living like cavemen. Last edited by snowman; 05-09-2008 at 03:22 PM.. |

My question is due to my curiosity, nothing more. Curiosity is just natural for us scientific types. Pointless zings seem to be the only answer that liberals can come up with. When you are clueless, just put nasty words into the mouths of others and then zing them for saying something that they never said. |

By the way, I don't drink Gin either. I do enjoy a good bottle of Silver Oak Cab, but its not that late in the day yet. I love my job, always enjoyed work as much as play. In fact I would have paid to do the work I did. There is NO way anyone can have more fun than Racing a Porsche. I get a real kick out of all the high tech gadgets and I am certain no one could be happier than I am. I am retired and still having fun. I know a lot of other people who have a good time and are very happy with their life and their work, so I wonder about people who think living in a mud hut, eating fruit and nuts and dying at age 25, are somehow happier than we are. Some people are happy, no matter what their circumstance is. I really doubt happiness has anything to do with why people are still in the stone age. Last edited by snowman; 05-09-2008 at 03:50 PM.. |

Our capitalistic system is what has allowed me and some other compassionate people I know acquire enough money to pay our own way to Nicaragua, and financially support an entire new villiage. Yes, they smile more than we do. Mostly, because for the first time in their lives, they have a future, because we are helping them purchase land! They have a community coffee crop, and every family has their own plot to do as they see fit. And we see them beginning to thrive. When it comes to poverty, we both want the same thing. We just have very different ideas on how to get there. The Superman-colored glasses think all conservatives are selfish trolls, who would step on their mother's neck for another nickel. The Dantilla-colored glasses look at government as the most inefficient way to help social problems. Hold government responsible for basic defense and infrastructure (note I didn't say "hate" government), and leave the rest up to people. Foreign aid to Nicaragua doesn't help these people. Bureaucrat's salaries must be paid. Forms must be filled out. Oops! The accountants just lost a few million bucks somewhere. The local corrupt officials prevent the funds from getting to the right people. Very inefficient. Poor results. When I personally write a check, I can see the results, today. And all of it goes where it will provide the greatest benefit. Wow. Compassionate conservative.... Who would have thought that? |

Back to your original question, I will comment on my recent trip to central Mexico where many people may not live like cavemen but sanitation is way below most modern societies standards. They have an abundance of natural resources and plenty of intelligent, hard working people. So the only reason I can come up with is rampant corruption... or mans inhumanity to man.

I honestly don't know... but I would bet the Mexican mafia is not rampant with liberals.
