considering that the locals in most of these places don't get sick when they drink the water, I'd have to say that us soft westerners are the weaker example of the species

FWIW, I think you will find that water borne diseases are the most common cause of illness and death of poor people in developing countries. You will find many stats via Google.

Surely you knew this!

Best,

BTW, looks like I totally misread where snow wanted to go with this thread.

Perhaps it's my small, caveman brain that is so easily misled.

Who in that picture is better off?
I thought about going over their and living on the beach, there are showers and everything, so you could be a relatively clean homeless person.

Snow - don't know the answer to your question.

But I do know, that the veneer of 'civilization' is very, very thin indeed.

Ok, snow - since you misread my first post, I'll try to answer your question -

First off, my definition of cavemen is simply: people who have very little material possessions and who have very little of the modern luxuries that all of us who are online here have.

So why are there cavemen?

1. Some folks are part of a nomadic culture, and they choose to make a life out of living in tents and tending to their herds. It is their choice to not live lavish lives - but to adhere to simpler ways.

2. Some folks do not have the means to live in anything more than a simple mud house or cave. They are below the poverty line, and that's it. I won't go into who is to blame here - but that is the fact - they are too poor to afford anything else.

3. There are some remote areas in the world that are unaffected by the modern progress. Take, for example the countries of Irian Jaya and Papua New Guinea. The rough terrain and extreme remote areas of those countries prohibit much of the modern world from penetrating into areas where pockets of people live.

4. Not all people have the same opportunities to modernize their lives. I mentioned this in my earlier post - the man in Kenya who would have to use his whole lifetime earnings to move his family to the US (or some other 'modern' country) simply cannot do that -- it is beyond his means to move out of his cave.

I just asked the question, WHY? Your comments are truly offensive, you implied racism, I only asked WHY Why is approx 25% of the world living like cavemen? Your reasons do not make sense. You assume a lot, present useless information on why you think we are somehow responsible for their condition. We are not.
1. How did my comments imply racism? I do not understand how you come to that conclusion.
2. Please explain how my reasons do not make sense. If someone is so poor that they cannot afford anything but to live in a mud hut, how does that sound illogical?
3. I never implied that we are responsible for their condition. All I implied was that we (those from the USA) may need to go out of our environment in order to see the big picture. And we do have the ability to help others who are less fortunate than we are.

Quote:
SnowmanWe are very efficient, clean people. The carbon footprint is bogus, a red herring. Even 2000 years ago the Romans lived, on an evolutionary scale 30,000 years, better than much of the rest of the world and those same people today. Their per person impact on the environment was much greater than anyone today.
Can you supply a link to a source that would prove this notion? I find it hard to believe that the Romans caused more pollution than we do...

Quote:
snowmanFinally...What is narrow minded about asking a question about a simple fact? I made no attempt to state any reason as to why those people live the way they do, but I did ask the question WHY do they even exist in todays world?
Sorry snowman -- but your quote below shows that you are being judgemental and narrow minded:
Quote:
snowmanThen why are they still living in mud huts? Political oppression has been significant in every country in the world, yet these people are still cavemen! Why isn't the rest of the world in the same sorry condition?

I have a very simple answer to Snowmans question: So why most people in the world live like cavemen? One possible reason is that it costs energy to not live like a caveman: energy to produce electricity, oil to put in your car, etc...Since the USA, roughly 5% of the world population, uses 25% of the worlds energy, there is simply not enough energy available for everyone to live the way people live in the US. It would not be sustainable for the entire world to waste energy the way it is wasted here. So you should thank them to live like cavemen, and you can see that when cavemen, like the chinese, do not want to be cavemen anymore, the price of oil goes up.

Snowman,
As Scottmandue said in an earlier post, get the book "Guns, Germs and Steel" by Jared Diamond. It is an excellent book that will help to explain the way some societies prospered while others did not. It explains why there are still "Cavemen" in places like Borneo and other third world nations.
We are lucky that we were born in the US and that that has given us a distinct advantage, but we are not necessarlily so far out of the caves. My mother, born 1945, in New Mexico lived in a 12x15 one room shack with dirt floors and the stereotypical outhouse until she married my father at 18. His house was not much larger but had wood floors. Both "houses" are still owned by the families and are now used as tack sheds. Are they Cavemen, or just folks who lost everything in the depression and caught hell trying to pull themselves up. by their bootstraps. My parents bought their first computer last year, but they certainly live a better life than their parents who were dirt farmers and horse ranchers in New Mexico.

I love visiting with my wifes mother in South Korea. She lives on the beach in a house that her family has had for a few generations. It has been modernized with the modern conveniences like indoor plumbing and electricity, and she lives a very simple life that revolves around family and community. No television or ipods for the kids when they come visit. Is it "Caveman?" I do not think so, but you would not believe how your worries melt away when you are there and get to leave behind all the modern "Conveniences."
Get that book. It is a pretty interesting read, and it will explain in a logical sense why there are still cavemen on Earth and how we in the West have gained an advantage over them.
We are blessed to be Americans despite what certain politicians wifes have to say about the gloom of America and how they have never before been proud to be Americans. We should be proud, but we must realize that, regardless of being black or white, rich or poor, we have been blessed.

Why do cavemen drag their women by the hair?

So they don't fill up with dirt.

Best,
Am in New Delhi India now and I used to think that the locals could take this crap (no pun intended... yea right) then was in a local pharmacy here and a woman came in, bought 5 boxes of Cypro after being told by the people there that it was the only thing that would stop the runs. Yes, the locals get them just like we do, only not as often.

I walked out of the place with my nexium, happy in the knowledge that I already had a dose of Cypro in my bag in the hotel if ever needed!

My question is due to my curiosity, nothing more. Curiosity is just natural for us scientific types. Pointless zings seem to be the only answer that liberals can come up with. When you are clueless, just put nasty words into the mouths of others and then zing them for saying something that they never said.
Ya, right.

Your pretty transparent. The scary thing is that you come up with this stuff.

Have you ever met anyone on this board?

Any of you guys know this guy?

Here goes another. Putting "words" into my mouth. Scary ? Only someone that thinks the worst of others and their intentions.

Why are you so scared that I ask a simple question? Are you afraid of being a caveman yourself, ie just one step up?

One of my grandmothers was born in a log cabin. Yeh, a genuine log cabin. Wood stove and all. But at least she had a metal stove and an outhouse. She even learned to drive a car about 1915. So why wasn't she stuck in a mud hut with no metal implements? Why are there people, and its Not a great life, in fact I bet any one of them would trade places with you and your lousy lives in an instant if given the chance, still living this way? Many have the same resources we have. They definitely do not live that way by choice. What holds them there? They die at ages of 20 and 30 years. They have no way to treat the most simple medical problems. A simple infection can be fatal.

Z man has in fact implied that their fate is our fault. It is not. But he and others feel guilt for the way we live vs the way they do. Why guilt if its not our fault? Thats a question for the Psycs, but not related to the fact that we have nothing to do with it.

Its really a simple question, WHY are there still people living in the stone age, like cavemen? No crap like we would like to live like them, we are free to do exactly that, yet I see no takers. No psyco crap about how we live, just the question of WHY do they live that way? No crap about energy, its irrelevant. There is enough energy for all at this time, especially if we freed up all our resources that the zealots have locked up, for no reason whatsoever. They are in denial, denial that so many people can live the way we do without starving, like their kind predicted. Maybe thats it. They are just mad that their great prophets were wrong and we did not starve as predicted, we are in fact FAT and dying because of being OVER fed.
