I love when cops ask you "what are you carrying a gun for?"

I had a cop ask me "why are you carrying a gun and wearing body armor" after i'd just been ran up onto the hood of a Nissan Maxima and had to endure 2 miles of hood surfing before the lady i was repossessing finally got her car stuck in someone's back yard and it was safe for me to let go.

What the hell are you supposed to say to that?

I'm sure the law varies state to state, so just be sure to check your state's laws. And the laws of any other states through which you might travel.

Here in Washington, any concealed weapon must be under your immediate control. In a car, that means on your person, or so the courts have ruled. For a lady, that means on your person - not in your purse. This effectively precludes glove compartment, door pocket, under seat, or any other sort of carry other than holstered.

We are not required to declare to a police officer that we are CCW holders. If asked if we are armed, we must answer if we are CCW holders. Funny, though, if we are carrying illegally, we need not answer. Self incrimination and all of that. Go figure.

Anyway, check your local laws before proceeding. They are literally all over the map. What is legal for me might land you in jail, and vis versa.

That's exactly what I would say too. Though I've never come across a cop who exhibited the slightest hostility to my carrying, not even BATF folks when I've done business with them in my day job. I have jokingly asked them if they'd expedite a tax stamp for me. The one time I got in trouble for having a case of primers visible on the back seat of my car when I illegally parked in U.S. Capitol permit-only parking, the cop remarked that he used the same stuff in his own reloading. In fact, when I got arrested another time, I chatted with the cops about guns all the way to jail and they even drove me home when they were done with me.

Not necessarily. There are federal weapon transportation laws. As long as you do not make a scheduled stop in certain states, you can pass through without doing that state's song/dance.

http://www.handgunlaw.us/documents/USRVCarCarry.pdf

People I've met who are LEAST knowledgable in firearm laws? Law Enforcement Officers...

Regardless, the OP is asking how to carry his weapon in his car...he didn't say anything about crossing state lines. If you are going to carry concealed, then storing/locking the weapon inside your vehicle makes it useless in event of an "emergency". Wear it, or leave it home.
Relax. Obviously a 2nd amendement person, dont worry youll still get to vote for McCain!
As far as the federal government agency most natable taxed with dealing with firearms, there are no transportation Laws per se just complying with states to and from. I couldnt accesss your link. I do agree there are a lot of knowledgable people in the firearms industry, consumers etc who are good to lean on.

The point is that each state is different and when you dont worry about state laws thats when you forget and cross lines and find yourself in a non reciprical state.
