I believe it is true that the reason why the U.S. military upgraded from .38 to .45 was when they were unable to stop Philippine Muslims from attacking using their machetes (sp?)....even after firing/unloading a clip.

How is the stopping power of 9mm relative to the .38?

I'll give my thoughts, which always seem to piss people off in these threads and have them call me names...



I like a well built .22. I find that I can place 5 shots within the space between someone eyeballs from 10 feet with a .22 faster than I could put 2 shots within the space of their head with a 9mm, and worse for a .40. I think that a fast action .22, with a well indexed grip and some practice is so much faster and more accurate than a bigger bore gun, that I would consider it to be the equal when it comes to stopping power. You can cleanly fire one handed if needed (how often can you get both hands and a stance going when woken up in the middle of the night??). Some iridium sights and practice, and you can put holes wherever you want in the dark moments after being awoken...and there is ZERO chance of it ricocheting and taking out your wife, or going through the wall and taking out your kid.


But, like i said, the flaming will commence now, because you're a pansy if you don't at least shoot a 50 cal Desert Eagle.

Now a 50 cal would be fun. Lets say in the unfortunate event of a terrorist situation you could nail them from a mile away and they wouldn't even know which direction it's coming from.

.50 cals are prohibitively expensive to shoot. Fun for a toy, but not a serious home defense or first gun.

DARISC, SIG's and Glocks are probably the highest quality, most common and affordable semi-auto's out there, though they ain't cheap. H&K's are super too, but more expensive and I don't think worth the extra $$. I have an H&K P7, but I got it as a police turn in and dirt cheap. Trigger pull is very different between Glocks and SIG's and both have different safety mechanisms, or lack thereof, if you know what I mean. I have all the respect in the world for Glocks. You couldn't destroy one without a machine shop. They are tough as nails. But SIG's just feel better to me and I can't stand having a handgun where I can't see the hammer as with Glocks. They just make me nervous. I can close my eyes and I still know when the hammer is going to fall on my SIG's. Not so on Glocks.

If you really want a composite frame gun, be sure to check out SIG's SP2022 and 2340. They get a bad rap because SIG never bothered to try to market them, but they were made to compete with Glock. I have one (.357SIG) and it's probably the best gun for the money I've ever gotten. I have about $250 into it and bought it from a guy on SIGforum.com in a Home Depot parking lot. I was shooting it at the NRA range when the local law enforcement sales rep. from SIG was there. He tried it out and agreed that it's just a stellar, underrated gun for the money.

Again, I'm an admitted dumbass newbie to handguns, and I know that this guy is a whacked out Liberal, but I find what he says interesting and seemingly logical. What's the opposing arguement?

Little gal I know surprised someone in her apt, had a disposable camera in one hand, keys in the other. She and her gaggle were partial to disposable cameras to document the girls night out thing, which seemed to happen often. A .22 can do some damage, with well placed shots. Don't place your shot as well, and maybe you have problems. You hit someone in the shoulder with a .22 they will be pissed off, standing there looking unhappy. You hit someone in the shoulder with that Ruger Super Blackhawk .44, or a Colt .45 auto, they are on the ground.

I like a little airweight S&W .38 myself to stick in my back pocket, so to speak. Very small, 5 shot, shrouded hammer revolver

I quite agree. A guy was selling one here in NZ and said he's only fired about 20 shots from new. And added, after your've fired a shot you'll see why I've only fired 20.

Yes plus the cost. They are about NZ dollars $12 per shot. Still, fun though.

No flames from me...I am so comfortable with my Ruger MKII Target Bull Barrel 22. pistol that I can walk cans with it.

I would have no issue using it for home defense if I was new to guns and wanted to get proficient with a pistol quickly. The easy fix for stopping power would be to also get a used pistol grip shot gun.

I just bought a used Mossberg in excellent condition for $200.00. Couple that with a Ruger pistol that can be purchased for less than $350.00 and you're all set for less than $600.00

I also have other, larger caliber pistols (a 9m Belgium Hi-power and a .45 Kimber) but shoot the 22. a lot more...cheap and fun!
