Dad was flight crew most of his enlistment so we always went to the flight surgeon. Good stuff.
I remember my first physical when I was 12 or 13, it was for summer camp. Flight Surgeon that day was a nice looking woman in a flight suit. I remember coming out with a stupid smile and finally on the way home Dad asked me what I was grinning about? "Dad, that woman touched my balls." He laughed so hard he had to pull over.

I've tried for years to find some high school friends. I had one buddy contact me through the schools alumni web site but even with both of us searching we can't find the others. It's a b!tch not knowing if they are dead or alive.

I was stable through high school but did not keep in touch with more than a few folks - I went to my 10 year reunion and remembered why.
Not very many people of note and everyone I cared about I easily kept in touch with. Now, the problem I do have is that I was in a Boy Scout troop for a long time and THOSE folks I miss. I still keep in some touch with 2 of my old scout masters (one married my mom but that is another story altogether) but almost none of the boys.

You should have seen the disappointment on my face the next year when I got the big black Dr. instead of the one I had the previous year...

It was a physical guys...the only difference I think between then and now regarding a 12/13 year old boy is that now a nurse also would have to be in the room.
That would have only made it better (assuming the nurse was a girl).

There were a lot of bennies of being a brat, for one, if you got caught doing something illegal by the military police on base, it never went on your record, at least not in my case. Good times! Too many stories.

Where I was in my formative years there were quite a few air force guys who worked in the local PD during their off time.
I never got away with anything my Dad did not know about. I don't know about other services but Air Force bases were very much a community of folks rather than what you see in the civilian world of strangers living next to each other.

One big bennie in high school was never having to buy gas. You did however have to know which vehicles in the motorpool were gas and which were deisel. Free gas always came with a free 5gallon gerry can to carry it in. "course I had some explaining to do when dad found 15 gerry cans behind garage.

Swimming pool was always a popular place in the summer, and who could forget trying to see down the tops of the girls swimsuits in the summer between 7th and 8th grade, there wasn't anything there to see. |

Most of the off base shenanigans that we got caught at resulted in our being escorted to the front gate with little more explanation than "Here, this is one of yours Deal with it". Our defense to a bewildered guard was "We're not even military. That cop must have been nuts." A quick dash back into general population followed. The guard never gave up his post to chase us and we knew of many other ways to get back on base.

My father was Army from around '41 to '72. Parents spent a lot of time in post WWII Japan, came back with an adopted half-Japanese son one time and me another
. That son, my brother, was also career Army, and a decorated Airborne Ranger Infantryman in the rather unpopular war that ended in '75. Dad had a long tour at the Pentagon, so my brothers and I used to go to the basement gym there, it was fun. Army life was a good way to grow up.
