Toys

With the sale of the 951 complete, I'm going to buy myself something with a portion of the proceeds. I'm only going to buy one thing. (Part of getting rid of the 951 is re-introducing fiscal discipline to myself. )

Here are my thoughts:

1) A motorcycle.
2) An HDTV.
3) A GMAW (MIG) welder.
4) New couches for the family room.
5) And AR-50.

That is how you define re-introducing financial discipline to yourself?! You sold the 951 to pay off debt, right? Buying a bunch of toys probably isn't the right way to start that process.

I can afford any one of these things while still paying off the debt and having plenty left over.

I can afford any three of these things and still pay off the debt.

Mig

Then you can MAKE more toys, or buy cheap ones and fix them up. But then again I'm biased

HDTV

But then I'm a home theater geek.

BTW I'm still using my 37" CRT TV so I am not completely financially irresponsible.

Pay off your debt. Put the rest of the $$ in a stable savings account or CD. Wait a couple of months.

Yes, this goes against our culture's ideal of instant gratification, but in the long run, consider this:
For example, if you're going to buy a HDTV, if you wait then:
a. The prices will drop a little.
b. The technology will increase
c. Given more time, you will be able to better research your choices.
d. You may realize you have the much needed money to redo the bathrooms like you've been wanting to do for the last 4 years....

I would invest half of it in low risk mutual funds and then take the other half over to my friend Asadulah who works in securities...

Make it 2 - an AR50 and a AK clone. My "investment" last year was an AK clone. Dealer friend got it for me for $275ish. Sold it last weekend for $450. Don't think anything in the stock market could've done that for me...

You sold my car?!!!

I understand though- I've done the same thing. The whole "Fiscal Responsibility" thing. It sucks, but as a result I have no credit card debt at all, and we have a savings account now. There's a certain satisfaction knowing that fact. BUT- its a slow process. It takes a LONG time (at least on my salary) to build serious wealth. Its super, super easy to spend it.

The best spending rule I've come up with is this- I get all ready to buy something, then I wait a week. This has prevented 3 major senseless purchases so far.

Yep, I'm going to pay off my credit card and student loan. I'll only have a mortgage and a car loan (and with a 2% rate on the car loan, I don't know why I would pay it off).

I'm always wanting to make senseless purchases. I also have my savings in a place I can't touch it...

Good point. Make sure you get two welding helmets.

Most of the time I would say the AR! However, knowing that I only put a handful of rounds through my .50 every month (at almost $5 a round), the fact that there aren't a whole lot of places to shoot them, and seeing the multiple/ more frequent uses of the other items on your list....

Wait until there is a "big" cash surplus before buying one!

just my .02 worth

Get yourself some Natuzzi leather couches for the family room. We have them in our TV room. The leather is like butta. Not cold to the touch when you sit down on the in shorts.

Gotcha. In that case, I agree with Jake, get the MIG. Then you can just build new stuff.

Just last week my neighbor busted off the mount for a wheel on his lawnmower. He brought it over and I welded it up that night. In exchange, he's fixing my dishwasher this week.

Think of all the money I saved. Heck, at this rate I can't afford to NOT have a welder.

Seriously though, my MIG (Lincoln 140C) paid for itself & more in the first year. Even at full price, which offended my sensibilities, it was one of my most sane purchases in ages.

Guess it depends on what projects you have on the go or foresee over the horizon. I had plenty, so it was well worthwhile
