Yea, kind of comes with the territory. However, there is a guy on there who is on his second TR and does all his own wrenching in his little one-car detached garage out in rural southern Michigan.
You should find his postings and advice very helpful. If I recall, he goes by the name 'carguy'.

Good luck, and be sure to post pics if you decide to take the plunge!

Here's the F-car in my future.

We drove one of these in Europe over the summer, and it was huge fun, and beautifully made. The build-quality of these things is astounding, and has won all awards in Europe.

Remember: "It's not the meat it's the motion."

My wife now wants one, and I expect we shall have one.

Indeed.

The new Fiat 500. Built in a state of the art plant in Poland.

Won all the European quality and design awards.

Very cute. And there's an Abarth version.

As for being a money pit; its all relative. A guy driving a Honda will tell you that a 911 is a money pit and so a guy driving a 911 will tell you a Ferrari is a money pit. JR has some great advise posted above. If you're planning on buying an older 88TR for $40K, you're likely gonna get some challenges with it, but what a sweet ride!

My vote would be to be careful, but if you can afford it, then go for it!
But the guy in the honda would be right. A 911 is a money pit. (So is a 928..ask me how i know).

Hey Byron,

The car is out of state, so do not have any idea of who to use locally. I use Brumos on the new car for warranty and Al Broadfoot on the old one's when I cant figure it out myself, then World (Lotus of Jax) on the Elise.

Wayne, this is the later 88 or 88 1/2 as you put it. I think it is a deal, but getting kinda skiddish with all the " money pit " stuff. The car still smells new.......

When I purchased my '89 930 a few years back, I looked at Testarossas briefly as that is the only Ferrari that had comparable performance and the price difference was not too bad at about $10K-$15K. I never test drove one, but spoke to several dealers and was fortunate to be at a European Car Show in Denver, where there were a few Testis. One owner I chatted with, had recently bought his '86 or '87 'Rossa for just under $60K and had to have the timing belt done...$12K just for that!!

I feel pretty confident that I could do most things on a 'Tossa, incl. pulling the motor to do the Timing belt, as it cannot be harder than on a 32V 928!

I love the look of the later Testarossas, one of the few Prancing Horses I would like to own, the new models do not excite me as much even though their performance, hadling, braking and reliability is better. Prices are falling - luckily.

Remember its not the price of admission that kills you, its the maintenance, so it pays to be a good shady tree mechanic!

Good call, I've never seen Top Gear applaud an economy car as much as that one. Another great car that the USA will never see.

For me it all starts with what "I Want", then I figure out the rest....

At almost 50, I finally figured out that I can have anything I want. So I want a Ferrari. Planning to keep the TT as a daily driver.

I'm not attractive enough to drive a drop-top. Plus I'd get a sunburn on my bald spot.

This shop isn't far from Brumos, he does a lot of those fancy fiats, incuding a few older, very rare ones$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

The cut GTC/4 cars (there are only one or two around), are one of the best conversions I've ever seen. Here's a pretty much unattractive car that gets tremendously better looking when you cut the roof off. It's almost like it was meant to be this way. Shocking that Ferrari never made a spyder version.

This car has been around in this form, since the 80s, I wonder where he got the idea to cut the roof

Those GTC/4 convertibles look like a Corvette with a bad body kit--from all angles.
