Hmm, right now I have a Chinese new year thing hanging up on the front door. When that comes down maybe I'll put one of the used targets up. Calvin has a few he kept from his last trip to the range. Maybe I'll add a caption saying, "range practice for my 12 year old son"

![]() Seriously... most daytime "home invasion" burglaries I've heard about, the perps gained entry by kicking in a back or side door. IMO, a "no wimpy doors" policy would solve that... a steel door in a steel frame is gonna send them to the next house 99 times out of 100.

Rikao4 - you'd be surprised at how much abuse my dogs took, before they succumbed to the pipe. The kids even told the cops about how vicious my larger dog was. He's 1/2 rotty and 1/2 bernese mt. dog. My other dog is half sheppard and half yellow lab. She’s not the most vicious thing, but has a bark that’ll shame most purebred sheppards. I’m not trying to get into a “whose dog is a bigger bad-a$$” pissing match, just want to remind folks that if someone wants your stuff bad enough – they’ll get it.
I still count my blessings that they didn’t kill my dogs (although they came close). They had just broken into a house down the street, before hitting my house, where they had “acquired,” an AK47 and some hand guns. I still have both dogs and have since installed a bank grade security system. Do I feel safer? Maybe a little, but knowing they weren’t deterred by the fact that my neighbor was standing across the street in the front yard, makes me think an alarm, no matter how loud, won’t stop them either.

How do you expect a pelican to wrap duct tape around someones wrist? Wouldn't their feathers get in the way?

My sister and BIL recently bought a handgun. Their neighborhood has gotten bad. The BIL was home one day when someone broke the glass on the rear door as was reaching around for the deadbolt. Other homes in the neighborhood, mostly old folks, have had bold, daylight intrusions that begin with busting down a door. Pretty scarry. I'm glad they've got a gun and I've told them many times to avoid conversations with burglars. Shoot them.
I suspect that each time a burglar dies in your neighborhood there will be less burglary activity. It still just blows me away that people are bold/stupid enough to engage in this career. I am a liberal, but I was raised in a logging town where just about every home is armed. There are no burglaries in my home town. I doubt if a burglar's career could extend as far as ten homes. By that time, he'd be dead. I guess I would almost prefer to find a quieter way of being awoken/alerted to the presence of a burglar. My feeling is that they are wanting to be shot, and I would want to be there for them, in their time of need.

Only DD respond to our SA friends prediciton...As the economy declines the stability of society will decrease and the crime rate will increase. Personal security will become a bigger and bigger issue as time goes on.

nice shotgun
The kids who beat the dogs would have a civil lawsuit filed against their parents PDQ if it were me. If they did that to my father in law they would "run away from home" and somewhere there would be an alligator or two that was a little bit fatter

I looked into processing against the kids in civil, but couldn't find a lawyer that was interested. I posted a request out on Craig's List and was even put in touch with a animal rights lawyer, and they still wouldn't touch it because of the kids being under age. I can't begin to tell you how much that pissed me off.

IMHO, big dogs are probably the best way to deter would be burglars. Unless the burglar is mentally ill or hell bent on robbing you or your house, he/she will move on to the next place. I live in an upper middle class neighborhood in Los Angeles County. There has also been a rash of burglaries committed by a group of 4-5 Hispanic males over the past 6 weeks. They have totally cleaned out a couple nice families I know casually. By "coincidence" there has been a long term construction build going on right in the middle of all these crimes...
I have two pittbull terriers. I own them because I love their medium/large size, short, clean SOFT hair, athletic ability, loyalty, and their tendency to protect their property from any intruders. They stay in the house when we are away. We have NEVER had a burglary issue and I seriously doubt we ever will with our pups on guard. I am a SoCal Native. I am 3rd generation Los Angeles County. There are some things that bother me, but overall, Los Angeles can be a magic place. In fact, I am still buzzed alittle from the Mulholland to Malibu run I made yesterday. Mike |

I will second that. My German Shepard was a natural guard dog. I couldn't sneek in the house late at night without finding her right there at the door waiting for me, checking on who was coming in. She only barked at night when there was good reason (normally pissing me off until I figured out she was right - someone screwing around in my yard or something). She wouldn't fall for the steak trick either though a tennis ball might have worked. Man I miss that dog. Gordo

Someone has already poisoned one of my outside dogs last year. Got her to the vet in time though. They stole an expensive set of porch furniture. Cops said since it was wrought iron they probably just recycled it. He told us how they are using shopping carts to take steel from construction sites.
Wife just saw the sensored floods in the front pop on late the other night. A young black guy with a back pack was walking around our cars and then through the yard. Glad she didn't wake me. I sure would hate prison life.
