Yes, but you are still in their store, subject to their rules. And just because you paid for 5 items, doesn't mean that you can't slip that 6th item in the bag that was in your pocket.

I agree with you 100% Thom. What we do is little more than just swiping a receipt with the color of the day highlighter.

I'd rather not go into it all here, but we have all kinds of auditiing procedures to ensure the integreity of our program. One of which has even included me going out and randomly secret shopping. Of course, I have to go to the warmer climates during the winter to do this, smile.

That is an awesome idea!!

I like to mix up receipts on em, you'd be surprised how many walmart clerks will actually look at a publix receipt, hand it back to you and not say anything

Would that be the same receipt that was handed to you 20 feet away? Quit shoving it in your pocket, and it miraculously becomes easier to procure it when the nice old lady asks for it

Doesn't bother me in the slightest when stores have that in place.

I agree HHI944, as with anything, any program is based on the actual boots on the ground, or people implementing it. If the employee doesn't give a rats behind, the program won't work.

Counterfit receipts are actually pretty common. So are folks picking up recepits in the parking lot, then going in and grabbing all of the items off the receipt, and then returning them.

If 75% of the shoplifters put their efforts towards and honest days work, they would be just fine. You would be amazed at what I have seen.

Here's one that slightly bothered me, but I do understand.

I recently bought a hard drive from Fry's and right before opening the box (including taking off the two plastic straps and shrink wrap), I noticed it was the wrong one for my application. I go back to Fry's and when it's my turn at the counter, the lady unwraps and opens the box to make sure the HD was the correct one.

On the one one hand, I think this may be excessive, but on the other, I understand that I could have opened the box, switched HD's and then reshrink wrap and strap the box.

That's also strange, because now they just added a perfectly good hard drive to their clearance bin, and will not make as much profit (if any) from it.

Fry's is really odd this way. You can return an item that is in clear plastic, clearly visible and unopened and they still put a sticker on it saying that it was returned and they mark down the item a few dollars.

This can work in your favor. You buy an item, put a small mark that you can identify, but they would miss, wait a day or two, go back and see if you can find it on the shelf and buy it again at a lower price....

Knew a guy 20 years ago in college. He had the sickest car stereo going but it looked home made.

Turns out he used to go to the Big Boxes of the time, Crazy Eddies, Harvyes, etc..

Buy an amp, go home, weigh it, gut it, weigh it, put the guts into a Radio Shack "project box" then glue either rocks or fishing weights into the original case and return it.

I can't tell you how many times I've put two orders, with two separate receipts, into the same cart. Next, I deliberately only show one receipt to the checker at the door. They say thanks and wave me on my way, me laughing at them for missing all the items on the second receipt that they never saw.

I knew someone that did something similar as well. Great idea, not very cool.

interesting ..as I saw a Mom and son switch out their 'bad' with a 'good ' modem at the in-house McD's..then go ask for a refund...
only reason this failed..
the clerk actually realized the difference between brand A versus B.
then it became..maybe he didn't buy it here and exit...quickly..
as for the receipt..
nah..I don't even slow down...

Something that really cracks me up are the people who wait to show the receipt...

I walk right around those people waiting to get either a highlight on pencil pushed through the receipt.

I refuse to wait to prove that I paid for something... as soon as the cashier gave me my change & receipt, I own the products I purchased..

I stopped shopping at Home Despot years ago because of this practice...

I've seen the waiting in line to show the receipt also and thought it was nuts. I just keep walking and they usually don't say anything. If they do I just shake my head "no" and keep going. Never a problem.

That is what I usually do, but this lady came after me.

I always stop and let them check. I also ask the old lady if she would like to look in my pants to see if I have anything stuffed in them.

I can't speak about everyone but Best Buy loses more thru internal loss than the typical shoplifter. I worked for them many years back and their security sucks big time.
CSUN basketball player Rutherford pleads guilty
Daily News
Updated: 01/30/2009 10:49:22 PM PST
Cal State Northridge basketball player Dallas Rutherford pleaded guilty to one count of misdemeanor grand theft Friday in San Fernando Superior Court after allegedly stealing merchandise from the Best Buy in Porter Ranch.

Rutherford was one of four defendants charged with grand theft after he, CSUN star Deon Tresvant and two others allegedly stole $6,600 worth of merchandise on New Year's Day.

Rutherford, the son of Shepherd of the Hills pastor Dudley Rutherford, was sentenced to three years' probation and ordered to complete 200 hours of Caltrans service. He also must maintain a C-minus average at CSUN.

Rutherford has returned $1,300 worth of merchandise - two iPods, two Xbox game systems and video games - to Best Buy. Tresvant, Jeffrey Braswell - the son of CSUN coach Bobby Braswell - and actor Phannuel Gbewonyo are scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 26.

I shop at Walmart, Sam's Club, and Best Buy...they all do it. The only one that has really annoyed me was Best Buy. "Mr. Loss Prevention Specialist" watches me stand in line, watches me pay for the merchandise, watches me walk to the door with the items in a Best Buy bag, then walks up in front of me stopping me at the door and asks to see a receipt. To which I politely replied "Are you blind? Step aside sir."
