i just finished reading a magazine article about how hunting will save the grizzly. 1st is the revenue generated; but you have to keep it sustainable and managed.

but the bigger part: it will put the fear of humans back into the beast. apparently, the largest portion of dead bears are the ones that keep coming into neighborhoods for the easy food. garbage, people garage fridges, etc. they kill alot of bears that dont get the message.

me? i couldnt do it.

Some people would rather see the bears starve to death I guess.

Besides having it stuffed or mounted or a pelt made, one can rest well knowing it won't be killing any people.

Same for the bear bro. Apparently it wasn't alert enough to smell the man waiting to blast his heart out, just as the jogger is not alert enough to detect the bear laying in wait.

I hunt birds and anyone who says this has never hunted. 100% of the time the humans are at the disadvantage.

I'm sure MT930 will chime in, my brother lived in Montana for awhile and he never ventured out into the mountains without a pistol or rifle, yes I'm pretty sure they bear meat. Here in Pa they eat black bear meat, we have a very successful bear season in this state and every year there seems to be more bears, good management!

The chances are they didn't/couldn't carry that motha out so they cut it's head off to hang on the wall as a "I'm the man, I'm the man" symbol.

I take Bill's comment to mean there is no real reason to kill a bear that is minding its own business -- except for a trophy.

And anyone who thinks killing one (non-problem) bear will reduce attacks on humans needs to take a basic biology course. Bears reproduce, right?

i couldnt shoot a griz. mulitple reasons. i gave up rifle hunting, i'm too tasty looking for bear hunting, i dont run fast, and my wife would never let me lay a bear rug down in our house. i think bowhunting a big bear would be insane.

Now hold on just a sec here. I have shot deer before and never once mounted one. I take them for the meat. We dont know what he did with that thing.

Close friend of mine was ambushed by a big'un last year up in the mountains. They had been tracking each other on and off for a while (months) and it finally came to a head one evening. Friend knew (had a feeling) they'd be seeing each other that day so he had his rifle with him. Nonetheless when Gentle Ben popped up in front of him at near point blank range he wasn't sure the rifle was the proper tool.

Sidebar: How the hell can an animal that big sneak up one someone so craftily...

Got Ben in the chest. Ben got taken back a few paces then charged, so he plugged him again. Pure dumb luck he got Gentle Ben through the heart and Ben didn't get up again. My friend then walked home, changed his jockeys, and went to get his tractor to scoop up Ben and dump him in the ravine. If he hadn't brought his rifle out with him that day, I guess Ben would have won the battle & the war. As it is, the Big Katz of the mountain ate really well that night. Day later and the carcass was picked clean!

Many others donate the meat to charity, and it feeds hundreds of poor people.

I tell you what bro, go get up at 3:30am, bundle up, wander off into the Canadian woods when it's about 20 degrees F (or maybe even -20F), and then sit perfectly still and remain totally quiet for hours on end in the bitter cold until you actually SEE a bear(which could take days, or never happen at all)

Then, with all the adrenaline pumping through you, and frozen shaking hands, possibly in bad lighting, very likely at an imprecisely known range, you have to make that one lethal killing shot despite being frozen solid and pumped full of adrenaline. And don't miss, because if you do that bear might just decide to kill you.

Then you will understand that big game hunting is one of the most challenging endeavors any man can undertake....and extremely dangerous.

As for what weapon the bear was using, the bear IS a weapon. A MkI grizzly bear is one of the most dangerous naturally designed weapons systems ever to grace the face of the earth- one with NO natural predator except for man.
Did ya see those claws? They'll tear your head clean off in one swipe. Did ya know a grizzly bear can EASILY run down a man in a very short distance? Did you know they can exceed 35mph in straight line speed- almost double that of a man?

To compensate, we get thumbs. I dare say we got the better part of the deal.

I know a guy who is an excellent deer hunter. He donates deer to the local mission every year. its pretty cool.

In rural areas countless thousands of Americans are supported by the donation of meat harvested by hunters and given to charities.

And of course it is well established fact that controlled hunting is extremely beneficial to the hunted species as a whole, as it keeps the population fit and viable.
