wow, check the map, it really is

California is in a perpetual water shortage, too many people wanting to live in desert areas.

3 Sungold, orange cherry, sweetest tomato I ever tasted
2 Yellow Pear
1 Plum Tomato, looked like yellow roma, got it because had a few flowers already
8 Early Girls
1 Beefsteak
4 different peppers, Ancho, Anahiem Chile, Habanero, Marconi
3 Zucchini and some basil

Drip irrigation and plenty of mulch, should be pretty efficient

I have fruit trees to water and fertilize too, lucky I live where two rivers come together, until the next time floods. I should be okay then too, as the office and home are on relatively high ground.

I would put a valve to make the shower water, or from the washing machine if it looked like I needed to do so to have a garden

Just enough time to rip out the grass, plant a xeriscape, and water enough to get it started.

Sand, pea gravel, river rocks (collected during hunting trips), some pavers, and some native grasses and other drought-tolerant plants (maybe also collected) - that will get you started - don't need to xeriscape whole lawn, even if only 1/2 of it, can maybe keep the rest green for lounging etc . . .
