Had you asked me a few years ago I would have never seen this coming. After years of being an unappreciated blue collar worker, I was just convinced that after college I would finally be a valued member of a team. I've spent my life doing more than my job and not being rewarded for it, eventually leading me to move on. I thought this experience would be different. Obviously I was wrong. Maybe this is simply a much-needed reality check.

Valued member of a team? Being rewarded for doing more than your job?
Matt, you're thinking old school, while corporations have left those quaint notions behind. Like Paul and Rob said, get yourself a career "plan," and work the plan, fine tune the plan, reach your planned destination. Corporations do not share your plan's goals, so do what you have to do to execute your plan.

Jim, I'm quickly realizing exactly how naive I am. Or maybe I'm just an idealist. Or a moron. Yes, definitely a moron.

We were hoping that it wouldn't come down to us having to say it, Matt.

matt, you are the bread winner of the family right? if so, you dont get the luxury of the perfect job all the time. i think you are still new in your gig. keep doing what you are doing, but maybe focus on networking. keep up names and contacts. if a great opportunity finds you, then jump. dont jump first.
i was also a late bloomer. i went back to school as an older person , same as you. well i was 26ish. i meet people from all parts of my industry. i try to do a great job every where and i hope people notice. i am now starting to get inquiries from complete strangers. it feels good. i am supposed to meet an austrian gentlemen who is off to taiwan to retrofit some tunnels. he asked me if i had any interest. my wife is from taiwan. she would give me non-stop lovin, if we could live there for a few years, just so i could learn the langauge. i hope to meet this man, later this week. this is his last week in the bay area.
