Steaming off Window tint
I have seen several mentions to removing window tint with steam. Anybody have any opinions as to which of these steamers will work best?

The amonia + trash bag trick works wonders without the need for any steamers.

No worries, just wanted to make sure you were aware of that option.

Most any rental place will rent wallpaper steamers. It should work well. The household style ones are crap in comparison. Trust me, I've steamed off a lot of wallpaper.

Hmm that's a thought. Of course that gives me a time frame to have to work in. Maybe I should call a few more if dads friends in the construction biz. If it wasn't fir defrost lines I would just stick with a razor blade

I think I will try Windex and a hair dryer today, what do you think, it must have been tried before.

Most of the steamers sold in retail stores are cheap copies of one of these:
http://www.myvaporclean.com/SF233_1_.htm Yes, these cost a lot more, but they are very useful tools that will last for years. I lucked out in the early days of Craigslist and bought a Vaporjet for around $200 from a guy who used to own a restaurant. The continuous fill makes the machine much more convenient when doing large jobs. I don't care how much you change your mop water, your hard floors will never be as clean as when it's been steamed.

I have the one in the first link. I use it for household and car stuff and have no complaints with it. It sprays plenty of steam and you can clean for about 45 minutes before the tank needs a refill. It does wonders on engines.

I've tried the ammonia method, and the steamer method. I used a large home steamer.
The ammonia method on a warm day works really well. After 15 minutes of warming with a plastic garbage bag over it, the tint peels off without any glue left behind. The downside is of course you need to be careful not to get ammonia all over your interior. If you do, it will take a few weeks for the smell to go away. The steamer worked ok, it was a little messy but it of course is just water. There was a decent amount of glue left behind, though. It was hard to get enough heat everywhere. It's more labor than the ammonia method. If I were doing it again, I think I'd do the ammonia, just be very careful and tape up the bag to the window, spray the ammonia in so it doesn't go anywhere. |
