Nothing to do with iphone or at&t. All cell companies will charge you full retail if you want to upgrade before the contract expires. All early adopters on technology take a hit on price

Maybe they need a check like this one
![]() I’m switching from V to ATT, getting the NOW reduced 3G phone for $99 this June! Yup, it’s jumping from the frying pan into the fire (*****es…all of them!)

Come over to T-Mobile!
They have the best customer service and we provide the best coverage for the price! (new slogan)... It amazes me how many people put up with ATT just to have an iphone. Serves them right........ So many better options: Androids, Blackberries, etc.... Love my G1 and hope to get the G1 replacement due soon!!

ATT subsidized your iPhone 3G by >$200 when you got it. So naturally they don't want to be subsidizing you by another >$200 just a few months later.
If having the very latest iPhone is a big deal to you, sell your iPhone 3G (might get $200?), pay full retail for a iPhone 3G S ($600?), difference is $400, a subsidized iPhone 3G S would cost you $200 anyway, so you're paying $200 extra. If it is worth it to you. I don't think the hardware changes in the 3G S are worth that much, personally. Can you merely pay $100 early termination fee and keep your existing iPhone 3G? I'm doubtful, though have never tried. Palm Pre looks like a potentially great device. We got one to test out, it is sweet indeed.

That is my opinion also. Not enough new in the updated phone to get me all that worked up about wanting to trade the 3G I already have.

At&T is no different than most companies providing electronic services. My cable company is running a promotion that new customers can get a faster internet connection for FREE for a year. I have been a customer for 20+ years and pay my bill online on-time every time. If I pay $60.00 per year more I can get the "free" upgrade. I am not sure how $60.00 per year is free but the customer service person said it with no hint of sarcasms.

Oh, and guess what - I paid retail (the horror ) Hitachi didn't subsidize my purchase for being an early adopter. Am I pissed? No. As island911 said, it's the cost of being on the cutting edge of technology. Suck it up and quit your crying.

Further; I do see an element (Apple-religion zealots) who are put-off by the notion that 'just anyone' can afford the shiny i-bobble. They feel that their cough*investment*cough has been undermined by the same people who they trusted with their i-money (and i-image). <-- ppfffttt ...yeah, I know.

You guys are right, I got way too worked up over nothing. I'll just jailbreak my 3g and wait for next summers offering. Dev team already has the 3.0 OS jailbroken.
I'm still pissed about paying for 3g that's been 'coming soon' for a year now to my area. |

Don't be too pissed. I turn 3g and wifi off most of the time, to get twice the battery life.

I workedED for Nokia for 5 years.
The manufacture sells a phone to a carrier for $250 the carrier then "sells" the phone to the customer for $20. Where did the other $230 go??? The $230 a subsidized and is recouped though your monthly usage and fees that you pay the carrier. This is why you sign those contracts. Why do they do this? When I go to Blockbuster they dont give me a free DVD player? In the earlier days of cellular they had to entice people to sign up and not many people would be willing to pay $250 for a phone. The customer didnt have a cellphone so wouldnt have seen the need, by "selling" the phone for $20 customers bought them. No one ever reads the contracts so everyone is happy. If you break the phone, drop it in the water or just plain "want to upgrade" expect to pay the full price. If you are well into the contract and are willing to resign an extension then you can get a break on the price. If you cant get a break on the price it can get ugly. Supply and demand, you are in a contract, still have to pay the contract, but now dont have a phone. Where is gets really nasty is that the carrier can take the $250 phone and sell it for $300, $400 or really what ever they wish. All of this may seem painfully obvious to some of you but I have seen a HEATED exchange of words between a cellphone store rep and a LAWYER over the cost of a phone. The lawyer just didnt see why he shouldnt get another phone for free after he dropped his in the lake. |

It does seem like when Apple releases a new device, some Apple fans get all outraged that they don't get a free upgrade. It seems like an unrealistic expectation. I never see Dell users enraged that their Dell laptop is now last-gen.

Jeez. Tech marches on. I paid $1,300 for an Apple II in '77 and it was a populated board only. That purchase has gotten me exactly $0 off all subsequent Apple purchases. (Wish I'd spent that money on AAPL back at IPO time.)
I've had horrific experiences with T-Mobile, and recently, excellent experience with Sprint (broadband card service) and AT&T (iPhone). From what I can tell, I'll be eligible for subsidy on a 3G S upgrade in December. I have no problem waiting.

Clear me up - my existing 3G can be upgraded to the 3.0 OS for free, right? So the only thing I'd get by upgrading to the 3G S is a few hardware features?
I'll save my Apple bucks for the tablet. |

The ugradeswith new hardware don't seem to be worth even the 200 from the reviews I've seen. Yeah the new OS is free to iPhone users.
