Fuch you, AT&T!!!!!
What a great way to treat your loyal iPhone customers that have been with you since the very first day. I know in my business, I always say "Fuch you, repeat/loyal customer, you have to pay more than everybody else" I hope they don't sell a single ******* unit.

Yea I am pretty pissed off at AT&T regarding this. I was reading and it comes down to the subsidies for the 3G phones. If you are an AT&T customer still using a 2G/Edge you are eligible for the discounted price. If you are a 3G customer though you will not be eligible for the discounted prices unless you are eligible for an upgrade (18 months into your current contract)
Other things that pissed me off regarding this is that MMS support or tethering will not be available at the 3.0 software release. MMS will be available later this summer followed by tethering (+ and additional fee) |

I'm guessing here: If you aren't up for renewal, you have to pay full-boat for the new iPhone.
Solution? Keep your old iPhone until your contract is up, THEN get the new iPhone. Instant gratification is so over-blown... |

I just (a month ago) bought a 3G phone when I dropped and destroyed my original iPhone. I was eligible for the upgrade price, paid it and went on my way. No way I'm paying full pop, or even the discounted price for the new phone. I want a few of the 3.0 features (that will work fine on my 3G phone), and don't need the video or compass.
In fact I thought about just going back to a plain old phone when I smashed the iPhone, but the reality is that I end up being able to do a lot of work via email on the iPhone, and that alone makes it worth the extra money. The apps...don't really care. ymmv though. |

AT&T gives new customers, or those who are upgrading to the iphone a much, MUCH better deal than those existing customers who've already bought one and simply want to replace the phone with a newer version (or who lost their first one, as in my wife's case). In our case, my wife's original iphone was about $200. After she lost the phone a couple of months later, we could only replace it for the full retail cost, which was over $400!
This is my guess as to what's pissing off HHI944. |

Solution: I'm going to pay the $100 early termination fee, jailbreak my phones and take my money elsewhere.
As for waiting: why should I, because ATT wants to charge me, a loyal, prompt customer twice as much for a phone? I've been back and forth with customer service half a dozen times today and been told everything from I'll be eligible for the 199 price to not being eligible for an upgrade until 6 months after my contract expires and having to pay 599 for the phone. I'm almost tempted to pay the ETF and start a new account, it's way cheaper than paying the loyal customer premium on both lines. |

Duh, In the past 20 years, electronics have consistently gotten smaller, faster, more features, and LESS EXPENSIVE.
When my CONTRACT (yes, I signed a binding contract when I bought my phone) is up, I can get another discounted one. Nothing new here. In fact, everytime I bought a new phone/renewed contract, they have been cheaper, smaller, with more features. |

Aren't you eligible for a new, subsidized, iPhone when your 2 year contract for the 3G expires? I believe that's how it works, and considering ATT subsidized the iPhone you have now it doesn't seem unreasonable to expect you to fulfill your agreement with them.

WTH?
Why do some early adopters expect that they should pay less than those who follow? Most all products cost more at debut than in full swing. The first buyers get to rub their superior ipone in everyone (who all really care) face. --so you paid extra for that . . .er ...privilege. ...is because you had to deal with the growing pains of the first iphone?

Tehering is available if you run the jail break software on the current 3G. SO far it looks like they have at least perfected it (jailbreak) enough not to brick the phone. Just restore if you need to go back to original.

Don't like the G1 and HATE T mobile (long back story), but the thought of getting a Pre has crossed my mind more than once. Background processes would be really nice to have. Ultimately, I'll probably just get my 3G jailbroken once someone figures out the 3.0 OS and have all the little features of the brand new one and then some for the $20 the place local charges to jailbreak 'em.
Let's not even talk about the $20/month I'm paying for 3G that's 'coming soon' where I live, just like it has been 'coming soon' for the last ******* year. |

I've been very happy with my G1. It's not the perfect device but such an animal doesn't exist (yet). One thing I have resolved to never go without in the future is the keyboard. I would even give up the touchscreen if necessary. Disappointingly the next Google phone will likely be sans kbd.

I'm sorry, but this post....yeah, man, we have it ROUGH in America. Paying full retail for a phone, its like a war crime or something! LOL. If paying a bit more money to upgrade your already insanely sophisticated phone to an new one is the worst thing that happens to you in life.....wow.....*sniffle*.......*tear rolling down cheek like that Indian guy in the commercials from the 70s*........
