Handguns in Michigan
A buddy invited a group of us up to go shooting on his pivate hunting land, just shooting not hunting. Thinking of taking a pistol but then I started looking at the MI law!
Handgun registration and it looks like one can't even transport through the state without a CCW permit from the home state. Is that right Michiganites? |

You ARE a NRA member I hope? Its free the first year... No problem to carry to and from unloaded in the trunk in MI. 2. The term “lawful purpose” is defined to include the following: (i) While en route to or from a hunting or target shooting area.

I took a Michigan CCW class a few years ago. Like Joeaksa said, trigger or case locked and in the trunk. In my Tracker I had no trunk, so I put it in the back seat area.

Hey Joe! Yes I am an NRA member and I did read the Michigan document; however, the lawful purpose appears to apply to CCW while the same document states that everyone in Michigan must register a handgun whether they have a CCW permit or not. I take that to mean residents and now resident.

I don't intend to carry but the Possession section of the Michigan law conflicts with the Carry section. Since the Possession section doesn't mention lawful purpose (transport to and from legal shooting property) an eager LEO may consider out of state visitors without registration a criminal.

Bring your ownership paperwork.
I found this recent update to the law in another forum, looks like you will be alright. PDF: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/msp/MSP_Legal_Update_No._71_263341_7.pdf First found in this thread: http://opencarry.mywowbb.com/view_topic.php?id=20705&forum_id=30&jump_to=454766

Looks like the FOID card is only needed, according to that PDF. There's no mention of ownership papers, which I take to mean purchased receipt.

FOID card, that's what I meant, and a receipt would not hurt either (if still worried). http://www.isp.state.il.us/foid/firearmsfaq.cfm

You're covered by the Federal Peaceable Journey Law and (for a little while longer) the Fourth Amendment. Don't consent to a police search of your car or get arrested and have them do a search incident to arrest and you'll be fine.

Thanks guys. We might even have an LEO with us so I'm not to worried now that the conflict in the old law has been cleared up with the legal update.
