the SS is a lot more raw than the 749. really. the 749 is easier to ride, even though it has more power.
i'd ride the monsters. 900cc's of naked goodness.

My thing with naked bikes is the lack of wind protection. We get a lot of wind here, and the little bit of windshield and fairing would help...

hell, the bike i learned on had almost 90HP.
1986 Yamaha FZX 750 Fazer specifications and pictures i think 99HP, as listed on that page, is a bit optimistic. however, the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times are correct.

I really need to ride one... There just aren't many around here...

i am coming around to the 748. the 888 is a bit dated. if i were to buy brand new, 848.

 Love the 888 too, I don't think it's too dated, it still looks cool IMO

the triumph 675 is the bomb. you get the best of both worlds: good torquey grunt with the inline triple, yet high and fast revving like an inline 4. it won just about everything it entered, IIRC.
