the hottest (and i mean heat) pants i ever wore were a pair of dark blue corduroys, back in the early 80's. i hated those pants.

Ok I am hot and only have my phone. You have a web site but I found this.

http://www.npr.org/2012/07/25/157302810/summer-science-clothes-keep-you-cool-more-or-less

Draw.

We need mythbusters I test it in real world conditions. Forget theory or speculation.

from your own article:

"Researchers have studied the heavy black robes worn by Bedouins in the desert. They say the key there is thickness. The outer layer of fabric does get hotter because the black color absorbs more heat. And that heat doesn't get transmitted to the skin because of the thick fabric."

the fact is that black is better at giving up energy (there is a reason for the skin color of native africans, besides the sunburn issue, and the cross-section shape of their scalp hairs). if there is any air movement at all, black will keep you cooler.

sorry, but its physics. black is the coolest color to wear.
Nu-uh!

At least not in Southern California. I've worn black shirts in the sun and they are HOT! White is much better.

Convection is the dominant method of heat rejection (aside from the phase-change in sweating) for people, animals, and things less than 500 degrees because radiation is proportional to the 4th power of the absolute temperature.

True, black is the best color for radiating heat if you consider a hot blackbody in a vacuum without any irradiation. The SR-71 was painted black because at 90,000 ft. the air is so thin there isn't much convective cooling. The compressive heating of the air at Mach 3+ also made the plane VERY hot through conduction/convection in the localized high density air, so radiation was a significant contribution to cooling (along with the fuel). The sun was a minor factor in heating, unlike spacecraft which are painted white to reflect the sun and reduce the need for cooling.

However, black is also the best color for absorbing radiation. The sun puts out way more watts than a person. The black absorbs both your radiation and the sun's. It gets hotter than a white object and at the temperature of you or your clothes it is going to be re-radiated at infrared wavelengths from both sides of the fabric. So you get a heat-lamp pointed at you as well as away from you. Black is hotter than white so more radiation in both directions than white.

White just reflects what you put out so you don't gain or loose heat through radiation. White doesn't absorb as much solar radiation. It reflects like a mirror meaning it doesn't get as hot and cause as much radiation towards you as black does. There is a reason why solar ovens and solar thermal powerplants use parabolic mirrors pointed at a black body.

Convection rules, though. So getting airflow over your skin is the best way to keep cool. Otherwise the hot fabric will make you warm through convection (and conduction where it touches your skin).

You guys can squibble over what is hotter but I can tell you the hottest thing you can wear are those crappy plastic uniform pants when you are in a shop at over 100deg. Color is not an issue.
Don't go all Captain Factual with me Max.

I have worn a white shirt with black graphics. The black text was so hot it left a mark on me.

I will go with Max. White cotton shirt works best for me.

I am just happy we did not have a repeat of one year ago today. It was 113 which ties the all time record for the hottest temp ever in Oklahoma City.

Track day at Roebling tomorrow!!!
And the manager of the dealership told me that I could just drive the loaner!
He also said we'll sit down and figure things out as far as the service dept goes....

that sounds like when a cop tells you that your discussion is 'off the record'....

It's all good.....this guy is pretty cool so there's a chance I'll get some resolution. If not, I'll drop my happy little not off on Monday after the corporate guys chew the service manager out.

The squeaky wheel gets the grease......unless it's at this service dept.....then it seems that wheel would get a good dose of corrosive agent so you'd have to come back the next day....

this dealership hasn't had an F type stay on the showroom floor more than 2 days.........and that one was a god awful poor imitation of imola orange...

Just went and smacked some golf balls around the pasture. Had three really nice hits before one dinged the roof of the garage. Seems I'm driving a little farther than I was last year...
