I'm fitting in 5 trips to SoCal in from May to December. If I can just last until May.

Outback Porsche 01-10-2014 03:26 AM

That engineer thread is funny. I've been sharing some of the posts with the guys at work. The comment I made is a quote from a t-shirt I wear to work occasionally.

Jim Richards 01-10-2014 03:33 AM

yeah, it's pretty funny

Good Friday morning folks.

Jim Richards 01-10-2014 06:01 AM

Morning, Glen.

Tomorrow, I'm going to take my wife to the annual RV show. She's lusting for a Class B Mercedes diesel-powered Sprinter RV when we retire. So, to keep her hopes and dreams alive, we're going to see all the latest offerings in the RV kingdom.

When we do retire, we wouldn't want to buy a new one. Not into buying real high and selling real low. Probably look for a 4-6 year old model and keep it until we tire of traveling that way. I'm not sure how long that'll be.

GH85Carrera 01-10-2014 06:23 AM

It is absolutely astonishing how much a high end RV can cost. 20 years ago I knew a guy that had a million dollar Bluebird motorhome. A million freaking bucks on a vehicle based on a bus? I can buy a HUGE mansion with a 6 car garage for a million bucks.

My great aunt and uncle retired back in the 70s and they spent over 30 years traveling in in various RVs or trailers. They lived in Washington and eventually owned just some property and a concrete pad to park the vehicle on. They would stay at "home" for two months every year to claim to be residents.

They drove to Barrow Alaska and all the way down to the Panama canal. The hit every state and every RV park in the country many times. No schedule or itinerary, just go.

Anyway his comments were that with a motorhome if you need a loaf of bread or milk you have to drive the house to the store unless you pull a small car behind. They are expensive and hard to service. He went through several. His final favorite rig was a pickup with a 5th wheel hitch and a large trailer. Drop the trailer and setup is easy. If the truck starts to get old get a different truck. It is just a pickup. The trailer is the key.

Driving a F-350 to the grocery store is not that difficult.

You need to do it the other way around: 5 trips from December to May!

Jim Richards 01-10-2014 09:21 AM

^^^this! If I only had a brain...

Our bathrooms are completely torn apart for the remodel. We really don't want to rely on a porta-potty while we're there on a work-cation.

Noah930 01-10-2014 09:30 AM

Airstream trailer. Park it in the driveway. Continue to remodel the house. And afterwards you'll have a cool guesthouse/RV.

Jim Richards 01-10-2014 10:00 AM

If only...
