FIL is headed to UofM hospital right now. He was working on a tractor and something flew into his eye, breaking his safety glasses. He went to the local ER and they referred him to Ann Arbor. Wife is driving the MIL there because instead of taking one of their new vehicles she drove the crappy old Buick.

Cold and blustery here today. No snow but it sure feels like winter hath arriven.

Eeek, hope he doesn't lose his sight! It's all fun and games until someone loses and eye.

I was surprised he was wearing safety glasses. He isn't known for is safety etiquette.

Wifey just called and they are just now getting there, following the ambulance. No doubt he will get the best care possible. UofM is known worldwide as one of the best hospital systems.

It can't be good if they had to send him somewhere else. I've gotten metal chips in my eye working in a machine shop (even with safety glasses), and it was never a big deal. Used to go to the eye doc, then to the company ER because of the company injury thing. But never had anything that actually hit me in the face. You would think safety glasses would make it better than what it could have been eyes naked or glasses that would easily break as long as they were the correct spec.

Remember when they changed the specs on the safety glasses at work. They gave everyone a pair. But they were those uncomfortable plastic things that always get scratched up and you had to replace them all the time. Looked on-line and found some I liked that were more durable and comfortable. A couple of people had me order some for them. Next thing I know I had to order 50 pair. I have 3 pair, one for work, one for home in my garage toolbox, and one polarize tinted for yard work. We have entire buildings at work that you can't go into without at least safety glasses. There are some areas that are marked off with paint lines on the floor that require both safety glasses AND metal toed shoes.

When we had the foundry there were lights and if the blue flashing light was on they were pouring and you couldn't go in the building without a whole getup that was a suit, shoes, gloves, and helmet with face mask. Otherwise just a helmet and safety glasses was okay. They had a whole changing area with showers. One of they guys took me to show me the new house he had just finished. He was real proud of it. It had a bathroom with shower and washer and dryer with a door to the garage, and into the house. It was so he could shower and change as soon as he got home, AND so his work clothes could be washed in their own washer and dryer. Said it was used only when he got home from work too keep the molding sand out of all their other stuff. Some of that sand really really stunk. He also had a car that he never drove anywhere except to work and back.

My wife's real Dad worked in a GM foundry and the stank was one you don't forget.


The other FIL just got out of surgery. It was a piece of wire in there. They are not very hopeful that he will see 100 percent out of the eye. He is coming home tonight, though.

Some of the Maori fellas I met the other evening make that guy look a bit like a fairy. Especially since they were all brandishing weapons. :eek:

They do seem to have a propensity to stick their tongue out though.

Not sure what it means in their society. Where I grew up it meant the same as, "Nanny nanny poo poo. You can't touch me."

Arrived safe and sound but some bastard stole my Lexus. Hire company offered me a Holden (GM) Commodore instead :( Said they could get me another Lexus in a few days if I wanted to but it would mean comming back to get it. Told them I had no idea where I was gunna be in a couple of days. The commodore will do (at a significantly reduced rate).

Anyway in Auckland tonight and heading north tomorrow. Nice view from our room.

Those burgers are just for photos and no one expects them to be eaten. It must have a stick down the middle of it. No way would that stand up unaided. That one needs a single piece of lettuces under the top bun ;)

Food photography can be fun, but to make it look right is a real pain. I don't know if it is a law or just a code of conduct but all the food photographers I knew used real food and nothing that was not edible except the props like the plates and silverware. Jello was usually made with tow or three times the gelatin to make it photograph better and often the product was not really cooked properly to be eaten. To get a turkey to look like the Norman Rockwell paintings it was mostly raw inside and just the skin was browned to a golden perfection. If it is really cooked the skin is all ugly looking.

Sometimes things were sprayed down with a spray bottle of oil or water to get the shine on some foods just right. I was at one shoot where the lady preparing the pies for the shoot might bake a dozen apple pies to get one just right for the crust on top. The other pies she would put back in the oven and finish cooking and let the crew pig out.

One time we were shooting a TV commercial for a local ice cream chain. They were promoting banana splits. They sent us several of the huge square tubs of ice cream and an entire stalk of bananas that had hundreds of bananas on it. The ice cream would start to melt real fast under the very bright lights. We were using 35 mm Panavision equipment and special turntables and equipment. It is hard work to make it look just right. I was just a helper with the lights and equipment.
