well, i think i found part of the problem: the motherboard is assigning the same IRQ to the USB controller and the video card. as i have to use the AGP port, there is no way to change the slot. the BIOS won't let me assign IRQ's (it says it does, but changing the assignments has no affect), nor will the OS. so, putting a different card in didn't solve the problem either, as it gets the same IRQ. bollocks. i am trying it with the USB controller disabled. this sucks, as i need the USB to run the WAN NIC, or whatever it is called.

i've built about 1000 win98 boxes and repaired even more. this stuff is just too new to work with win98 properly. things got really hinky once i tried installing one of the games. its not worth the investment in time. i don't feel like hacking at any more. xp runs beautifully on it and a hackintosh will satisfy my craving to monkey about.

i have played with ubuntu. i even have a disk with 9.1 on it. linux has come a long way. it still doesn't do everything i need it to do. i'll probably play with it again, soon.

edit: now that i have thought about it, ubuntu does everything that osX does that i do. perhaps i should just skip the hackintosh....

I have a couple of old laptops running Ubuntu, I love them, they are simply used for d-loading and such but they work great with very little required memory
