Alarick, she goes home tomorrow, but the doctors still don't know what's wrong. The stress test and 3D heart rendering shows nothing significant and really really nothing at all wrong with her heart. She apparently went on two short walks w/o oxygen today and one with. The hospital was kind enough to give my dad and myself the stomach flu. I've been pretty much in bed for two days.

You have to accumulate a certain number per year to maintain medical licensing. Each state is different in the number of hours necessary per renewal period. You can get credits for attending accredited lectures, conferences, exams, passing boards, etc. It might be one hour for a lunchtime lecture at the hospital or reading an article in a journal and completing the short exam at the end, or 20-40 hours for attending a multi-day medical conference. I think California requires 100 hrs every 4 years. When I was in Massachusetts it was 100 hrs every 2 years.

Sounds good on paper. But I've found the skeeziest docs are the ones that always manage to jump through the hoops and not get eliminated by them.

Example: To get recognized by an insurance company (so that they'll let you treat their customers and pay you), you have to join their MPN (medical provider network). One of the big insurers I deal with in CA for workman's comp is a dysfunctional company called SCIF. It's taken me about 2 years to be accepted. One of the reasons for their many hoops is supposedly because they want to be very selective to weed out the not-so-good docs. That's what they say, at least.

Sounds great. But when you're in the community, you have an idea of who the ambulance-chasing docs are out there. The ones who pull in $2 mil per year because their offices are mills, not because they necessarily practice good medicine. Actually, the guys who see 70 patients per day usually aren't on the local unofficial list of "best docs" if you catch my drift. But I've found that just about every one of these sketchy docs are about on every MPN out there--including the selective ones. 'Cause they're the ones who know how to work the system.

But seriously, Alarick. What gives? I usually don't get very sick. This is twice now that this has happened. I used that sanitized numeours times and scrubbed my hands before eating.

In highschool, we were given petri dishes in 11th grade bio and told to swab stuff and see what would grow. I squirted a bit of the liquid soap into my petri dish...and the thing grew like crazy. Eww.

There was also some report mentioned on the news radio stations today about hospital quality across the country. Apparently having a name institution (like USC University Hospital) did not necessarily equate with a good rating by this study. One of the things they looked at was nosocomial infections (infections you catch by being in the hospital). Maybe you and your dad really did catch a bug in the hospital--that's where infections congregate, after all. And they're often the superbugs that have evaded the hammer of antibiotics.

Sorry about your health situation, Dave.

Funny thing, people that start working at a pediatric clinic will invariably catch numerous infections from the snotty kids at first. Once you have worked for a few years its the opposite situation. Despite being stuck in the middle of a veritable microbial zoo all day long, I am never sick.

The immune system is truly an enigma.
