I have seen 14's with the narrow fenders so that is not always a given. As for me fitting into a 917, yeah if I am building it I think I can move a few things.
 There is a company down under that has a stellar kit for the bodies.

not much to move around without changing the size and geometrie of the car
They were built without compromise, without room to wiggle.. Can't put your seat back, firewall & engine is there.. Can't move your feet forward, that's where the plumbing goes for the radiator and other tidbits..  another dream crushed.. My job here is done for the day.

You my friend are grossly unaware of my prowess with a plasma cutter and a welder.
 since I am planning on using a kit for the body and not looking to make an original, all bets of what they are are off. Also not using a 12 cylinder gives me room to go backwards
