good job on the 90% on that section. keep memorizing those questions. your written test score will greatly affect how in depth the examiner will go with your oral exam.

..you'll be surprised that if you sat down for a couple nights, and literally just kept clicking through those answers...just by seeing a few words in each question, how quickly you'll memorize them.

yep. when i first came out here to LA last year, i had to draw the entire airspace map for LA center. all from memory. i literally had to draw every nav aid, airway, fix, (and all of the radials, distances, etc) MOA, etc. i never in a million years thought i could do it.

i ended up laminating a huge blank piece of paper, and used dry erase markers to gradually keep adding things until i had the entire airspace.

I'm aware. When I was into my last "lets finish this" kick, I was doing just that. I think partly to satisfy my dad, I'm also trying to be good and read the book. Obviously, decoding METARS, filling out flight plans and other things can all be done on the computer and without knowing a thing about the codes. E6B??? Almost a useless device today. Learning about ADF, come on.

for the test, you'll use rote memory..once you really start flying more, you'll learn from experience

when i started flying, the electronic calculator flight computers were coming out. that was a death sentence if you showed up to your exam with it...the examiner would take it, remove the batteries and say "welp...your batteries just went dead. how are you going to do your calculations now?" ....classic.

the E6B is a crazy little device. i can't even remember how to use it anymore. at the airline, we had FMS and a 24/7 dispatch, haha.

the ADF is useless, unless you like listening to mariachi music on the AM radion stations. the RMI, however, is a pretty useful device. I can't think of any NDB approaches that i've flown in long time. GPS RNAV is where it's at now

I've heard that examiners will still take the batteries out. I have a pretty good grasp of the E6B. Just need to dust those skills off.

That's what I say. He has XM satellite in the plane and a car stereo with CD as well. My dad has his ADF sitting on a shelf with a few other instruments that were removed to make room for newer devices or obsolete. The written test has 5 questions on GPS and 18 on ADF. I know it's still used in Mexico and Canada/Alaska. Places I'll probably never fly to.

i think the instrument exam still tests on LORAN-C navigation.

the worst is the ATP written. all of the performance questions are based on the 727. I went through a full 727 Ground school, and i thought the ATP was ridiculous. that was a "memorize the answer and forget it" type of deal
