I have three modern rectifiers in my tube amp. If I want to be pure, I have to change those out for tube rectifiers. Most seem to think that the three modern ones don't affect the sound in a negative way.

Yeah, cut my teeth on tube technology. Although linearity is always getting better in semiconductors on the small signal side of things. We've got some new stuff running with better than 55dB IP3.

The problem is hysterisis - never going to get rid of it totally.

But in all reality by the time you can really afford to buy the top end stuff your ears are knackered anyway.

Years of working in an environment where the backgroung sound level was at 105dBA, I know I'm not going to hear the difference.

I don't know. Things are getting cleaner, but there's just something about the old technology. There's something to be said for the polymer capacitors. The ceramic/sand resistors.

My uncle is an audiophile. He can afford the top end stuff, but bought top end tube amps instead. I don't think he has tinnitus, but never asked. I do, but I can still hear differences.

Jeff, my stereo speakers are from the 70's. There's just something about it. I still need to build a stereo tube amp one of these days.

As long as the cones are still okay, no reason why they shouldn't still put out quality sound.

Sharyn's home. I shall catch you all later. Hooroo

They do! The magnets should have degraded a bit by now. They survived the collage years at high volumes. I had them tested after at some point and was told not to touch them.

Have a good time!

The only advantage I see from the IC world as it relates to raw instruments is the control at low volumes. My half breed amp is decent at practice volumes but still has that warm sound. I still want all tubes but in reality it will be too much just to play through while sitting around

Not true. I could build you a decent home amp few a few hundred. You source the tubes. If you use new tubes, final cost drops. But since you want to go tubes, you know that they are more like light bulbs and considered a consumable.

Other than the tubes, the transformers are the next biggest expense - other than labor.

Well my money isn't good for a project right now so I will just be content with my Hartke. It actually does have a nice sound to it.

I'd be more than happy to build one for ya. Just pay for the parts. Looks like the transformers cost 118 (both), probably with some shipping.
