Glen, you need to get that thing together in time for autocross this weekend! I'm going to run the Focus, need to see if its faster than the 911!

This is the Mulholland of underground racing lore, particularly the tarmac between Laurel Canyon (really Skyline) and Coldwater Canyon, as there were no houses along that stretch. (I did a pre-dawn run along The Racecourse this morning!)

There's also Mulholland Highway, which runs from Calabasas (Topanga) all the way out to the ocean (PCH). Far fewer houses, more rural. I think that part is more scenic. You can reach upper double-digit (and near triple digit) speeds out there. But what we really enjoyed driving were all the canyons off Mulholland (Decker, Encinal, Las Tunas, Stunt, Piuma, etc), as they were tighter and more technically-challenging and less LEO-patrolled.

In between Mul Dr and Mul Hwy is "Dirt Mul." It's a fire road. You can't drive a car the entire length (just up to the Nike Missile Base by the top of Hayvenhurst & Mul), but you can hike/mtn bike it.
Don't forget Latigo.

To get to the end of Mulholland you have to take a right at the fork in the road with Encinal, then do some meandering in the Route 23/Westlake Blvd. area. That last bit is the the twistiest other than the Snake. If you take Route 23 to Westlake Blvd. you can hop on Upper Potrero to Reino to Lower Potrero. You go through Hidden Valley where they film lots of car commercials (actually, they film all over the Santa Monicas) and head down a very steep and tight but short canyon past CSU Channel Islands and into Camarillo.

My favorites in no particular order:

Mulholland from Kanan to Las Virgines/Malibu Canyon
Latigo Canyon
Piuma+Shueren (connects with Stunt, Rambla Pacifica, and Tuna Canyon)
Potrero

The best part is they are all very close. Potrero goes through my backyard. If you hike to the top of the hills behind my parents' house you can see Hidden Valley.

I love So Cal so much.

Those are all off of Hwy. It is fun to look them up on Google maps. Would probably be useful too.

I haven't found any roads in OC that compare to those in the Santa Monicas. They have some nice wilderness preserves here but that means hiking and cycling only- no pavement.

Oh, and Deer Creek and Little Sycamore. Can't forget those, too. Dave and I and a few other Pelicans used to spend weekend mornings chasing each other around up there. Incredibly beautiful.

And then, if you drop down to PCH, you and Lu can find a wide assortment of eateries. Up north by the Ventura County border is Neptune's Net (fried fish & burgers). You can watch the surfers across the street. Or there are about 5 or 6 restaurants at the Malibu Country Mart just south of Pepperdine. Can't recall their names. The sandwich place/shack there is really good. The Cuban place is good (gotta order their signature corn-on-the-cob appetizer). There are other places further south like ultra-chi-chi Geoffrey'$$$$, which has a fabulous view and makes you feel like you belong living in the Colony.

sorry-gotta go put the kids to sleep

There's also Duke's. And that place at Paradise Cove is good.

The great thing about driving around the Santa Monica Mtns is that you're never that far from civilization. You can't really get lost. Go one way and you hit the ocean. Go the other way and you hit the Ventura Fwy/134. Then it's just a quick blast home.

Jim, if you drive it during the hours of about 10-3 (or maybe more like 10-2 in the winter) you will have to put up with lots of crazy traffic. Sport bikes passing left and right, sometimes over the double yellow, lots of slow clueless supercar drivers, bicyclists, the local hot shoes, cops, etc. It is best run in the mornings or later afternoons as the sun is starting to get low. Unless you want to watch a car show drive by.

My workplace is shutting down for the holidays but unfortunately I only get paid 4 days out of 10. However, it means I will have time from the 21st to the 5th to meet you if you are still in So Cal.

Unfortunately, we're heading back east on Saturday.

I'm starting to think about Mul Hwy now. Decisions, decisions.

It's 80 miles door to door from my parents' house in TO to my place in Santa Ana/Fountain Valley (right down the street from GMG and PMNA for the moment). About 20 of those could be Mulholland Highway. The freeway is usually pretty good for me on the weekends. You can also take PCH from Santa Monica to Topanga Canyon to Mulholland Highway.

Not sure it will work. My work from home plans tonight fell through and I have to put some extra time in Pacoima, plus some work at TRE. Bummer.
