Dagwood seems to get a lot of whine out of something he is eating?

Get back to that high paying job Jim!

Morning all. I am making my computer work hard. Putting it through the wringer. We finally had a chance to fly some projects yesterday. The program we run to make the final product orthophoto is called Pix4D Pro. It pegs out all 8 cores on the CPU, uses all 32 gig of ram and hammers on the hard drive reading and writing. My computer handles all that but I built it just as a home computer for my email. Way overbuilt for that but now it needs a SSD hard drive and a real video card.

The video card I want is the GIGABYTE GeForce GTX 1080 DirectX 12 GV-N1080WF3OC 8GB 256-Bit for just over $500. It can display a maximum resolution of 7689x4320 which is way higher than my 4K monitor can display. The main thing is it has 2,560 CUDA cores and that is what helps make the program process the images faster.

The program even supports dual video cards but one will help a ton.

Oh well, maybe after we get paid for this project I can order one. Maybe someday we can stop spending money and get a paycheck.

You might as well get a new Threadripper CPU while you are in there!

The project just finished up in the initial program. It covers 5 square miles and it is just over 16 gig of data and it is just 6 inch pixel resolution. I need to run it through three more programs to get to a deliverable product the customer wants, a 24x36 inch color print. It is copying from one computer to the other and that takes a while.

Good Afternoon group. Completely overslept. Can't have anything to do with working really late can it?

The network vs local drive access is at almost a tie with current hardware. You would really have to set it up and do speed test to see. Being an old guy I would think working off a USB3 SSD external drive and sneaker netting to work with other computers would be good. But I don't know if the programs working on such large files would be faster on an internal SSD versus a USB3 SSD. Or if the time savings of sneaker netting versus net transfer would be worth it.

Way back when had a Gigabit switch and gigabit cards in workstations. Ran 2 nic cards in the file server. Rest of the company was on 10mb ethernet. The server had a array, striped using fibrechannel to the server. Server file access was as fast a internal drives. That was a long time ago when you could first get gigbit stuff. Really pissed me off with the IT department came in and swapped my Gigabit switch for something slower "so it would match the rest of the network"? Raised a big stink. There is a reason why I was Network Admin for a while. Besides the fact they couldn't figure out how to route Appletalk/Bonjour.

My only big file concerns now are backups. And my only network speed concern is wireless streaming. My biggest streaming hog is streaming 1080p to my laptop and screen sharing that video with 5.1 surround to my AppleTV to watch on my big Sony. Requires some wireless horsepower. That's why I put up the wireless bridges/extenders.

Would be really neat if I could network mount my AppleTV, iPhone, iPad like I can my other Macs. But no, you have to use USB like they were concerned about some such thing as security or something.

SATA 3.0 is 6Gbs so a local SSD will be faster and USB 3.0, if you can get the external hardware to work at the theoretical maximum, is 5Gbs. If you have to transfer the files anyway, an eSATA connection on both machines would be the best bet or move to 10Gb NICs on the machines. Wireless would take a while though.

You could do a NAS as well like the old place, assuming a SAN would be expensive and cumbersome at this point.

I am sure Glen has time to wait on the transfers as they are. You gotta eat sometime.

Had the GB wire choked down to 20mb transfer because the tree that fell thru my roof poked a hole in it. Didn't realized the speed problem until I tried to do a full backup to my server and 250GB was taking all da y l o n g .

What really upset me was when I called a local place called 3 Guy Computer Service. Told them my wire had a hole or something and needed someone come pull a new wire. Said it was really easy because a wire was already there, just need to tape some on and pull it thru then terminate it. They said they could do it and sent a guy out. The guy did a bunch of testing and told me the wire must have a hole or something and it needed a new wire pulled, AND THEY DON'T DO THAT. Wanted to charge me $140 for telling me what I told them before they sent the guy out. #@$!! I refused to pay for that SB.

Not only did they want to charge me and couldn't do what I asked. They wasted my time and I had to find someone else to do it.

The final orthophoto of the 5 square miles was just over 2GB. It is 29128x25024 pixels. So it is 729 Gigabit image. It is a mosaic of a lot of normal size images and ortho-rectified and geo-rectified so it aligns with the earth in the proper orientation and scale.

If I copied the files to a USB 3 device and then copied them again to the other machine that copies them twice. That is way slower than my network. Just copy or move the files and it is done. All I have is gigabit switches and hardware. With one user I really doubt it would ever be noticeable difference in speed. If I had dozens of users all copying files around at the same time, sure it is faster.

But, but, but the 10Gb is 10x faster!

Understandably it isn't that large of a file to copy with what you have, especially working on one at a time. Now if your wife were playing Call of Duty it could affect her latency in the game getting her killed.

She plays some games on her iPad but they are not interactive games. Card games and word games. I have not played a computer game since I upgraded from my Commodore 64 to my 4.77 MHZ PC with 640 k Ram.

I really liked the MYST games. Well up until this last one, Obduction. They came up with a puzzle that wore me down and beat me. The stupid game kept locking up and/or quitting. Usually during one of the shimmering screen effects where you are supposed to be transporting to another dimension. Had to be one of the puzzles, right? Anyway, couldn't figure out how to make it stop, even with multiple unhelpful tech support calls, So...I quit before finishing it.

Now my IRS audit has morphed into the company we started and both of our personal tax returns. It really seems like the owner of the company we worked at has contacted the IRS and he figures we have been stealing from him. We have to dig up every single receipt. They want the invoice from whatever was purchased, the proof of payment with our credit card and proof that we paid for it with our personal money. The good news is Amazon and New Egg keeps a record of everything I bought, and what credit card was used to pay for it. Finding that is not too hard. I pay my credit card with a draft from my credit union. It helps that I pay off my credit card each month and the totals add up but every purchase I made on the credit card shows up.

The good news is I don't buy porn, no strip joints or trips to Vegas and the ranch in Nevada with the hookers. I do spend a lot of money on parts for my 30+ year old cars, but WAY less than just a few months of car payments.

Oh well, once again I have to look at the bright side. This will prove without a doubt we have not been ripping off that SOB that owns the company where we used to be employed. It will show what fools we were using our equipment to produce the work we did and the former company billed out. All we got was our paycheck.

morning all. Good luck with that Glen. To bad there is not a way to get even. Say send him a bill for the use of all your personal equipment.
