"Abandoned" Shelby GT 350
I spotted a 1967 GT 350 in the weeds behind a factory about 5 years ago. A friend and I offered the owner (an employee there) $20K cash for the car. The guy thought about it for three days then said "no thanks". The car is still there and it's driving me nuts. The car is just rotting away sitting where it is. That said, it's actually in pretty good condition. And I'm 99% certain it's the real deal. I'm not buying anything unless this is verified. The color is wrong for a '67. But the car has all the signs of a Shelby. Factory looking roll cage, steering wheel, hood, air scoops and of course it's badged "GT 350". Anyways, I'm going to write him a letter and send it to his work place and again offer some cash for the car. I don't really want to show up when he's working and bother him. Does anyone have any experience getting people to let go of things like this? Any help drafting the letter would be appreciated These pics are old. The car is completely obscured be weeds now.

Ouch...that looks sad. I'd suggest doing some good estimating as far as restoration is concerned. You may have offered too much already, considering fix it costs.

kill him and free the car. He deserves death for letting it sit there to rot, and the car deserves better (assuming it's real).

Shelbys were made in black and gold for Hertz's "Rent a Racer" program. If it's original it's worth more than the traditional Shelby paint scheme.

That car is worth WAY more than 20k cash if it's a real shelby. I would laugh at you and your offer if i was him.
I also wouldn't leave it sitting outside all this time either though. |

Not in 67. From what I've been told. My neighbor has a well documented 66 Hertz car in black and gold.

He didn't laugh at all. He thought about it for three days and said "no, but my wife would love for me to get rid of it". The fact that it took him that long makes me think he can be persuaded.

As you know authenticity is important here, those things are one of the most cloned of cars and rust is a killer. I had a 67 convertible I let go of years ago as I was getting estimates to fix the rust and paint it. The good thing is all the parts are available.
I think Hertz was 66 only, black and gold, automatic instead of manual, no supercharger.

People have been making replica Shelby GT350's forever. If he had to think about it, it probably isn't real.
Before you buy you should check with Shelby American Automobile Club to verify. Would be a great find if it is real. Good luck.

The early Hertz cars were manual transmission. Later cars were ordered with automatics because the manual cars were being returned with blown clutches.

I will never be able to figure out the mentality of people that let good, classic cars sit and rot to the ground.
I currently know of a Corvette, looks like a bumper car from the road, that has been sitting under pine trees for years. The paint was white. What's left is now somewhere between white and pine bark brown. It's "not for sale." Several years ago there was a '65 Corvette that also sat in a yard rotting near my home town. It had a "Not For Sale" sign on it and I was told the guy would go ballistic on anyone that dared ask him why he didn't sell... or IF he would sell it. And just recently... At work we have a few gear heads that fix up old cars, etc. One of them was spouting off about some Detroit convertible he'd looked at that was under an open shed, full of rats and rust and rot. I told him that anyone that would let such a car - something akin to this possible Shelby here - sit and rot away should be horse whipped. He jumped back on me telling me how smart the guy was for letting it sit and "accrue value" until he restored it. Where does that line of thinking come from? |

When I was in high school there was a trailer out on Church road with a large vacant lot behind it full of old VW's and one or two 356's. I can remember one day poking around back there looking at a Karman Ghia tub and seeing a small 356 engine with two distributor caps. I had no idea what I was looking at, but I can clearly remember thinking "why on earth would that little motor need two distributors".
Sigh... it's all gone now. Don't know what happened to the old man.
