Help me choose a Porsche color...
I'm in a quandary. I just picked up this frame: it's an Appel, hand built in Wisconsin by Mike Appel, one of the chief builders for Trek when Trek produced steel frames. This is a 1988 model, 53 cm, Columbus SL tubed. Appel is known to be within the top builders in the U.S., next to Brian Bayliss and Richard Sachs.
Anyway, this thing has been chewed up pretty well, but more than apt for any riding/racing I can do on it. I would, however, like to paint it, rather than let its field scars exist, particularly on the seat and chainstays. I was thinking of painting it a Porsche color, or colors. I've seen some bikes with the Porsche Gulf motif, which I think might be cool as that's always been one of my favorite liveries on a race car. Nonetheless, I seek the advice of the board here as to what color or colors I should paint this frame. So fire away. I also might need new decals, so if you guys have any suggestions with that, please offer them. Thanks. ![]() Here's the frame: ![]() ![]() Here, one can see the extent of chipped paint and road rash this frame has suffered, particularly on the seat and chainstays. The inside of the dropouts are particularly worn.

Yeah. I'll look around for some shots and try to post them.
These photos are more to show the battle scars this frame has. What can't be seen is the lug work, which is the best I've seen yet on a non-built-to-order frame.

I painted my kids BMX Minerva blue, it looks really nice. I will try to find a picture.

1988? What was going on in the Porsche world in 1988?

Hmmm... good question.
![]() Here's a Blaupunkt 962C from that period. Though I'm not sure how that would translate onto a bicycle frame.

dd Man - you need to find an early 70s frame. Think if the possibilities! The greens, the oranges, the yellows! Road bike with a duck tail even..

Shoot it white again and get some Blaupunkt Porsche graphics... that 962 is period correct.
That would be one unique bike.
