sticking gas pedal. happen to you?

i have experienced "stuck at full throttle" three times that i can remember. all test driving new vehicles. two gas, one diesel. last time was twenty years ago. it was not a big deal really. hectic for ten seconds. i would think that many of us have handled this situation with little or no heartache. having said that, i was extremely irritated at the dealer. happened to you?

It happens to me on my Triumph every few years as the POS Amal carb goes out of round, and the slide sticks at the top. Reach back calmly and turn off the key, no prob.

I almost crapped my pants though the first time it happened. and once, with a lady on the back and her leg was sort of blocking the spot where the key is. She thought I was getting "FRESH".

It happened in my 1973 VW. That massive 60 HP was wide open. I hit the brakes and turned the ignition off. Since it did not have power brakes or steering it was no big deal. I was just 3/4 of a mile from my brothers shop. I would turn the ignition on and let it accelerate, kill the ignition and coast. I drove over to his shop and put replaced the throttle spring. No big deal.

I watched it happen to a guy that is here on the board (hasn't posted in a long time) in in his 911. He floored the accellerator and when he went to shift the throttle stuck wide open. Had both feet on the brakes and didn't stop until his car hit a curb. Soukus has it on video.

I do recall when I first got my 911, that my gas pedal seemed get stuck to the floor an awful lot. But that wasn't a 'technical' problem.

Had that happen to me on a test drive after putting the 951 back together. I shut off the ignition, put it in neutral, and coasted into a parking lot.

Turns out I rotated a hose clamp on the intake so that it interferred with the throttle cam. Once I went to WOT, it wouldn't let the cam rotate back and close the throttle.

It's happened to me a couple of times. I had the carb (or was it head) off of a Dodge Omni once, first drive after it stuck wide open on a 6 lane straight road in no traffic. Was an easy fix.

the other time was with an '85 Olds Delta 88. It used to stick from time to time. That one sucked.

I've had it happen a few times. Once it happened in my 400+ hp drum brake equipped 68 LeMans.

That was exciting....

In my fathers old 86 chevy 4wd shortbed pickup with the 305 and the tow package (that 305 was a beast) we took it out when we first got it and It wouldn't accelerate faster than like it was on 1/4 throttle. so after messing with it we got it to go wot and it stuck there and it just kept accelerating even with both feet on the brakes it easily crept past 70 and it was a two lane road and there was a curve ahead and if you shut it off the steering would lock. so we found a side road that went straight from the main road and we shut it off as we went onto the side road. there was rust on the throttle body that caused the linkage to stick open.

My father told me a story from when he was 17 about his old fairlane that stuck but it was only moving like 3mph, so he decided to get out run along side to the engine and flick the linkage back ( he admits it wasn't a good idea) so as soon as he gets out he cant quite reach the linkage and it starts picking up speed so he cant hop back in and he watches as the steering cuts to the right and it goes down an embankment into the orchard and into an apple tree.

Its happened to me twice. Once Driving A Freightliner Firetruck hot to a car wreck call and then in a brand new ambulance . The funny thing is I have had Toyotas for 10 years and never had a bit of trouble.

There is a house around here that got rammed by a 426 Hemi Charger with a stuck throttle back in the day. All the guys that grew up here back then knew about it.

We had a 2000 996 with E-Gas stick on us here in the shop on Monday. Have never seen one stick like that before.

Had a 1981 911SC and the threaded portion of the throttle cable mount break right near the TB just as I was getting on the highway. Turned off the ignition, put it in neutral and coasted to the side. Got it freed up and drove home slowly to fix it.

seems like we all handled the situation basically the same. a chp in san diego recently
had a horrid accident in a rental lexus. i think it was a lexus. all dead. my point is, where you put your transmitting "pod" in a receptacle, then push buttons to start and stop the engine, can you stop the engine at 80 mph and 8000 rpm. is the push
button start/stop a design flaw? i have not driven a keyless, button start vehicle. i don't know how the engine is shut off.

Over the last few weeks I've been thinking that these people with stuck accelerators are morons, just step on the brake shut off the key no problem
I'm so superior blah, blah, blah. Then I decided I'd go for a ride in one of my goofy vehicles which happens to be a 79 Kenworth W900A with a totally hot rodded 855 Cummins eng. Well you guessed it the throttle sticks wide open. 500hp and 1850 ft/lbs of torque on a country road.
Almost shyte myself Luckily I had the presence of mind to shift to neutral. Holy crap!!Ok so maybe they're not morons just humans

Happened on my Land Cruiser several times after working on it. Both times I forgot to properly reposition my throttle cable into its mounting clips causing it to bind. I used the brakes to slow down and steer off of the road, then I shut it off. It was a total non-issue.

Had it happen in my Toyota pickup 15 years ago. The throttle linkage on the accelerator pump was sticky, and would bind sometimes. It used to stick from time to time, I always just rode it out. After a few seconds it would usually vibrate loose. One time it didn't unstick, (~80 miles from home in the hills north of Calistoga) I just put my foot on the clutch and it shook loose at about 5,000 RPM.

I limped to a hardware store and got a screen door spring and a pack of zip ties and rigged an aux throttle return spring to make it home. That fix kept was still on the truck when I got rid of it.

My throttle cam stuck open due to some ice that formed in there last winter. Turned the car off and coasted it onto the shoulder, cleaned it out, and all was well.

Also, my Lloyd mats ride up towards the pedals over time. They don't impact the gas, but the clutch has a tendency to get caught on it which is annoying.
