Do you stop
Your newspaper delivery while on vacation?
Having debate with the wife. Paranoid me thinks all it does is tell people that you are away. |

What pizzes me off are those "free" papers/advertisements that get thrown in my driveway. I call and tell them to stop, yet they don't. So, I collected them for about 3 months, filled a 50 gal. trash bag, and dumped them on the publishers (home) driveway.
Yes, newspapers stacking up at your front door tell a burglar "we're not home". |

We have 4 cats, one on meds so when we go away someone either house sits or stops in twice a day so mail and paper get brought in
my problem is I have no idea who my paper guy is. It's not like back in the day when we had paper routes and my delivery guy was Johnnie up the block it's some person that drives through all of our neighborhoods in the middle of the night and whose answering the phone when you call to stop service? What's worse: telling the newspaper agency to stop delivery for a week, or having 7 newspapers lying around your front door?
To me the latter is much more of a sign that nobody's home.

We stop the paper when we go out of town for two reasons. First, they don't pile up giving away that we're gone and second if I have 2 weeks of newspapers to read then that is all I'm going to do for about half a day when I get home!
As I travel a great deal on business, I will often stop the paper when I'm out of town even though Steve and the kids are home. The paper is mostly for me so there's no point spending the money if I'm not around. angela

I figure that the less people that know I'm gone, the better...

Exactly, faceless nameless people.
I really don't care about the house and contents, that's what insurance is for I care about my cats and young lady who comes to care for them I'd hate it if my house was targeted and something happened to them |

I stop it a week or two before we're away. Somehow I get some peace knowing that I'm here in case something weird happens (which is probably stupid as I don't want to be here if someone breaks in).
For our paper I can do it over the phone press 1 to stop 2 to restart, etc... and I've seen the delivery guy and he brings a computer printout, maybe there are no humans involved?

Years ago at my old house, my neighbor's house gotten broken into while he was away. I called the cops they caught them. Turns out he stopped the LA Times and an insider told his buddies. My brother who lives three doors down collects my mail/papers when I'm away.

I don't actually read it.
One of my cats can't seem to get her ass in the litter box with the rest of her body so I need the papers to keep the tray surrounding the box lined. She craps inside the box but the pee she keeps missing with.

Stopped it for years then got tired of supporting the newspaper that is trying to make the news and not just report it, and finally canceled the subscription 2 years ago. Turns out that they are really hurting now from people doing the same and may shut down.
Good, maybe someone will pop up who will start reporting the news again...

I stop the newspaper, to avoid telling the burglars "come on in". My cats only need looking in on every other day or so, why burden my neighbor with a daily chore.

Having been a modern paperboy, I can tell you that it's easiest for the paper people if you stop it. They're *supposed* to notice if you haven't picked up your paper in a few days, and make a report, which they hate to do, since it requires going back to the office after the route, not something you plan to do. Then there's a whole line of things that need to happen before someone starts calling your (empty) house and leaving messages.
If you get the paper delivery canceled while you're gone, then no one has to deal with that. I know you guys want your paperboy to be happy, right?
