Guys that are not bright enough to make lucid arguments in the "politics and religion" (PARF) off topic forum come to threads like this to tell you how dim the other fellow is...

Lots of guys that that own and know the Porsche marque post there...I own three and do most of my own wrenching myself...but certainly enjoy a good debate. If there is a thread that I find offensive, I can simply not open it.

Guys like one unnamed poster above...that post on threads like "Would you take a chicken to the vet?" don't really have much room to thow stones at those that post on PARF.

It's kinda like this is the garage monday morning and that's the bar friday night, once the liquor starts flowing so do the spirited discussions.

Off topic in a nutshell: The ego has to be right

The ego is very opinionated. In fact, our egos have an opinion on everything. Whether the subject is war, abortion, taxes, religion, politics, etc, the ego believes it is right. Every ego often confuses opinions with facts, and it always believes its viewpoints are right, but being right is identification with a mental position - a perspective, an opinion, or judgment.

Being right is how the ego thinks it will become happy. For you to be right, you need someone else to be wrong, and the ego loves to make others wrong in order to be right. In other words, you need to make others wrong in order to get a stronger sense of who you are, and it give you a sense of superiority which the ego craves.

“We are right and they are wrong” is particularly deeply entrenched in politics and those parts of the world where conflict between two nations, races, religions, or ideologies is longstanding. Both sides of the conflict are equally identified with their own perspective, and each side believe themselves to be in possession of the truth. Both regard themselves as victims and the other as evil and wrong. However, both sides are equally incapable of seeing that another perspective may exist and also be valid.

But there is still nothing wrong with a spirited debate if the ego stays out of it. Trying to convince an opposite they are wrong and your are right is an exercise in futility since facts take a back seat to emotional investment in a position. Its easier for many to disagree and hold on to their opinions rather than lose face and admit they are wrong. We all strive to with all our might to avoid congnative dissonance, rather than rearrange our paradigms to reflect what is actual.

Psychobabble on "off" mode.

But in a logical word, i'm always rearranging my paradigms to reflect what is factual. I do have other opinions but when faced with facts, I can change my mind. Some others, are just what we call hardheaded. This is tempered with the knowledge that the facts are true and not messaged.

Best part of this thread, which really belongs in OT.

Thanks for the 911 content.

If your mind is flexible, you will not fit in at PARF.

Bellingham is a beloved city, and for very good reason. Very high quality of life, in my humble view.

I've been here on Pelican since.... Oh, never mind!

Over the years I've noticed the following progression in individual posters on this BBS...
  1. Wow! This place is cool!
  2. What's this thing? (Insert picture of some obscure bit)
  3. How many HP will I gain by cutting holes in my airbox?
  4. What do you think of this engine/suspension configuration?
  5. Here are pictures of my project car/engine in pieces!
  6. The answer to your question is...

After a couple of years at level 6, posters seem to get a little bored with responding to the same ole questions over and over. At that point they start to drift away (Anyone here remember Kurt with his ST replica???), pass away (we miss you Warren and Roland) or slide over to the OT and eventually the OTPR forum for something new. I guess you could say that OT and OTPR is a form of purgatory for some of us.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome around here... cheers... and welcome to the jungle, so to speak.

And notice that, just because he can, Superman stereotyped you as someone who might not fit in over in PARF just because you are from Bellingham. I bet you were thinking "what is up with that?" Hope you're not offended... there are plenty of people here who think larger.

Over in PARF, you'll see how quickly the vast majority of the progressive "thinkers" fold up and disappear when their views and thought processes are challenged. It's fun to watch...

Anyway, stick around if you're having fun... we have ebbs and flows, but you have found a message board that is truly a gem.

Be sure to check out the Mulholland thread if you haven't already... it's a ton of fun.

I think the key word here is "enjoy" rather than "is from". The reasonable assumption, in my view, is that if you enjoy living in Bellingham, that you are a more liberal thinker than some in PARF.

Best,
Tom

You are probably right about that, Tom... good catch.

One more thing... try not to make a habit of having any food or drink in your mouth while reading through threads here... otherwise you will find yourself cleaning off your monitor and keyboard fairly often because of some peeps' ability to strike suddenly with humor.
