I would have been packing to deploy from Okinawa to The War. We got there a couple of days after the ground war started.

During Desert Shield we ended up deployed to PI when Mt. Pinatubo blew up, then after about a week back on Okinawa, we deployed to the Storm. Most people's memories of the Philippines are fun, mine are piles of ash.

I was at Ft Drum with my Guard unit for Annual Training when Kuwait was invaded. I accepted a full time position with the Guard the day the war started.

My how time flies..

Just got off active duty 3 months before. Watched the start at work.

Back on active duty in December, war ended two days before our flight out.

Seems like yesterday.

It was a Thursday night - I was out having dinner with my boss and 2 customers - the place we were eating at put the radio on so everybody could hear what was going on.
Thanks to all who served!

I was onboard USS Nimitz working with DESRON 21 headed over there. We were somewhere in the western Pacific. Got to watch CNN for an hour a day. Wow, 19 years ago.

I was going to night classes at Lawrence Tech, ran into my boss (he taught a course) at the coffee machine. We talked about it with some of my friends, kind of strange with the world at war that we still our deadlines to focus on.

I subscribed to cable TV because of Desert Storm and remember waiting in a very long line at the cable company office to sign up. While I don't care much for CNN's Hollywood type news reports, then and now, it sure made for compelling TV.

I'm still amazed that the Iraqis let news coverage go on during the Baghdad bombings. The military must have loved the real-time damage assessment.

I was a com guy in the Air Force at the time. The new circuits to the temp sites in the sand were already up and functional. We watched everything on a tv in our tech control shop in Sacramento.

I spoke to my former CO last week and it was great talking to him and reminiscing. He just retired in December 2008 as a USN Capt. and he's also a cancer survivor. The 2nd Bronze Star recipient that I've known and a real hero to me...
