Yes seriously, and not kidding.
And even respectfully.

So why is a clothespin a less worthy subject for [an artists] attention than say, an apple, or a bottle of wine, or a naked woman - yeah that last one is a no brainer but I thought I'd toss you a bone.

I will leave it to your own nuanced imagination to decide how others see no art in a replica of a clothes pin.

I will just do what the rest of the city did when the "art piece" was unveiled back in the 1970s, or whenever one of us walks by it now.

Snicker and laugh.

I guess the dis - liking of a certain type of art can't be explained any easier than the liking of it ?
Is that it ? Or you just don't have the time to think about it ?
Or you really just aren't interested in art enough to think about it ?
Either of those last two would make you a very poor judge of just what might or might not be art.

Really ? You can speak for "the rest of the city" ???
How much of the rest of the city ? Did you do a survey ?

Sorry for all the questions - just wondering.

Art? Maybe.

Explain: If the sneakers were placed at a more acute angle to each other, and a little more right shoelace visible, Then, YES, definitely art!

Best,
Tom

Maybe this is why the Eagles haven't ever won the Super Bowl and the Flyers haven't won the Cup since '75? We are being cosmically punished for our art purchases?

Yes and no.

I will if you will, and since I asked first you're up.

It's a pair of old discarded sneakers with the background concrete taken out and a white back ground substituted in.

It's not art. It's trash. Literally- trash.

More "art."

My turn? I think it's all quite ridiculous.

Clearly -
No wonder you never made it as an artist.

Since you still choose not to answer my original question, and you seem to like the out of context game of tell me what this is...

How about this ? Art? Garbage ?

Why would be nice to, but that would probably be asking too much.

That is a painting of garbage.

A painting of anything is art.

While I might agree about the running shoes & the clothes peg as rather pointless, the painting of those boots is different. There is a story there & the viewer can't help wondering what that story is . . .

Now that's better - Christ, you don't have to make it seem like pulling teeth.

So does it have to be done in paint then ?
Can a photo be art ? - a photo of garbage ?
Then why not the real thing ?

I get where you're coming from ( I think).
You expect an effort to be made and skill in execution.

But you do realize that painting - that all Van Goghs paintings were ridiculed as "not art" and "not painting" back when they were done (by the "rest of Arles, and Paris" - sorry, couldn't resist).

It's a complicated mess to be sure.
I believe I spend too much time thinking about it all I confess.
But it's more productive and rewarding than arguing about politics.
I believe.

Why so different ?
Those discarded shoes could have been worn by some bum - maybe a bum that was once somebody. Who maybe was a homeless Vietnam Vet. Or maybe someone who once had a good, "normal , unspectacular" life that went all to hell.
Maybe nothing so dramatic - just an old pair of shoes worn out from many a fun game of basketball.

I am reminded of Pig Pen talking about dust....
Charles Schultz was also a Vet - WWII, heavy combat and haunted by it.

My feeling is that we swim in a world of art like a fish lives in water and that the artists are able to make us see and appreciate what we might take for granted otherwise.
Not all of us see in the same way or can be made to see or appreciate the same things.
There is no right or wrong (IMHO). It's all good - or bad, or some of it's good for some and bad for others.
None of it is worth fighting over.
