Any ideas? It can be online I don't care. Bought some remington 8mm mauser last night. 20 for $33. Feels like I just got raped after a sunday full of shotgun shooting for the same price!

Thanks guys.

Cleaning cosmoline off of rifles that have been sitting a crate in eastern Europe for 60-70 years irks me a lot more than running corrosive surplus ammo through them. Anyone have an easy solution for that?

WD-40 or a silicon lubricant, then rubbing alcohol to get that off.

This is cheaper still:

7.92x57 Mauser (8mm) (178 GR.)Sellier & Bellot mfr., 40’s mfg. Berdan primed, corrosive, FMJ, Boat Tail, brass case. 15 rds./box, 600 rds./case. *Priced per case. Price: $158.95

If you have a dealer account it is even cheaper than that (by about $50 ) I like the Yugo stuff better, it shoots a little better for me. Never tried the Romanian, simply because I think steel cased ammo just ain't right. Ammo cases should be brass.

There are a bunch of different ways that people swear is the best, everything from running the stock through the dishwasher to making an oven out of a trash can and sticking it out in the sun for a couple days.

I just use Mineral spirits and/or Denatured alcohol and elbow grease.

hair dryer or heat lamp. just warm it up and wipe it off. cosmoline will seep out of the cracks and drip right off.

Man you guys are good. Looks like this is going to be fun! I just have no idea how to mount a scope on this bad boy. I am not a fan of Iron sights above 100 yds.

Plus I just got one of these...lee hand loaders and I have been having a blast reloading twelve gauge!

accumounts.com makes excellent reproductions of the original type scope mounts, and there are a few different no-gunsmith mounts.

By the way, for Mauser scope mounts, LSR= Long Side Rail, and SSR = Short Side Rail.

You can also have a gunsmith drill and tap it for standard scope bases.

If you want to do it cheap without modifying the rifle, there are a few inexpensive "scout" type mounts which replace the rear sight and use a pistol scope. You could probably get something like this together for $60 or so.

S & K ones are supposed to be pretty good:

emcon, It isn't the original stock, it has been sporterized. Would that affect the mount?

Shouldn't. May make it easier actually, some of the no-gunsmith mounts (the S&K Instamount in particular) require some stock inletting for clearance, I would be much more likely to modify an aftermarket stock than an original military one.
