Question 2 post or scissor lift, who has one

was thinking of a scissor lift but having some reservations about it. Does any one have one? do you work under neath it? A 2 post is more money but not that much more , would be a lot of moving stuff around to accomadate it thats why I was thinking scissor.

Good link discussion them: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/423162-bought-scissor-lift-today.html

Search "scissor lift" in this forum for many more comments. I'm pondering the same thing.

Have had both, still own a 2post. Love it worth it if you do a lot of work on it, else it just takes up space. Dueller's link is good.

Search "souk lift" in the tech forum. It'll turn up some good user info.

I like my scissor lift as it can be rolled into another room in my shop if need be. I have done all sorts of work including clutch and exhaust changes on many of my cars and have yet to feel limited by my lift. Two posters are nice also, but I love my scissors lift. I have some pictures in post #9 in Dueller's link above showing an Audi A6 on my lift.... plenty of room to work on any part of the car.

I love mine. When I'm not using it, it just disappears.

After a lot of research here and other places, decided to buy a scissor lift.

The major factor for me was the ability to buy motorcycle adapters, lift my small MF tractors and ATV for maintenance and work on cars.

It also will (I was going to pick it up from Greg Smith in Delaware this weekend) roll where I need it depending on projects.

I have a scissor lift too. I love it.

That said, one drawback is that it, along with the required ramps on either side, really takes up space when you're NOT using it. The ultimate deal would be to recess it the floor like in Thom's garage as posted above. That way, you don't need ramps on either side to raise up the car enough to drive over it, and best of all - it disappears when you're not using it.

Paul, I had a good experience with Greg Smith when I got my four post from them. I need storage primarily.

The link that Dueller posted was started by me. I love my scissor and would buy it again. A 2 or 4 post lift also are good it depends on your situation and space limitations. I know of two local Craigslist ads that have used 2 post lifts for $900.00 each so bargains are out there. And I agree a scissor mounted in the floor vs. on the floor is the best way to go.

We have a two post lift but still setting it up. Cannot wait to get it going.

Wish I had something like Thom does but no room...

Thanks, Bill...I spent a lot of time at their showroom in Delaware. It was really positive to be able to see all the various lifts side-by-side. I was impressed by their stuff...but, what do I know

rich lambert has a scissors lift and i have seen it in use a coule of times...seems to work real good, especially if you have limited overhead space.

Having done almost everything on a 993 on a lift or on jackstands, the oil change I did on a scissors lift was a throughly miserable experience. I will never ever use one of those again. I would much rather use jack stands any day. But I will own a two post lift someday.

I have never had a 993 on my lift, but I don't see how changing the oil could possibly be a problem on my Bend Pak scissor lift. There is a ton of room IMO. I have put clutches in both a BMW and a 944 turbo and plenty of room. Don't get me wrong, a two poster would make life just a tad simpler not having to park on ramps, but not having two fixed posts in my paint booth/auto repair bay is why I am tickled with my scissor lift. It has also come in handy as an ATV lift and as a lift platform to load/unload heavy stuff out of the back of my truck.

Here are some pics showing my BMW during a clutch change and my old #$@% Audi that shows plenty of room both in the front and the rear for getting to exhausts, transaxles, drive tubes, drive shafts etc.

It just sucks not being able to stand up. I was doing the Chuck Berry duck walk. And a 993 oil change is a tad more involved than on the earlier cars. If I'm gonna have to lay on my back, it's just as easy to do it on jack stands and not have to line things up on the scissors lifet. Scissors lift seems a lot better for doing suspension work or stuff from the side of the car. Underneath I just don't see any benefit.

I do most all of my work sitting a small stool on wheels..... very comfy for me. I have used my lift nearly weekly for the several years I have owned it. I do not know how I ever survived without one. One thing is sure for everyone (other than Rick I guess ).... ANY lift beats the hell out of floor jacks and jack stands.

About the same thing here. I use a couple of old office chairs for working on the cars and airplane. Easy to move around, vary the height and just works out.

I just did an oil change and valve adjust using the scissor lift...much better than jack stands! A rolling stool to work under the car is a must. I couldn't imagine trying to stand up under there for any length of time.

If you have the space go the 2 post route, clear floor is the best. Nothing wrong with a scissor lift, great tools for the $$ but they are a compromise.
