Awesome car.
Just an aside but I wish Jay would pronounce Porsche properly.

Great video, thanks for posting. He has some other great videos on there as well.
Why do you care? Do you correct your friends when they pronounce it wrong?

I am guessing it is for the navigator in the MM-type races.
Great video! Heck, my wife, who is clearly not into cars, even liked it a lot!

Saying "porsh-UH" is the worst. I think its one of the reasons we get a bad name! The other could be that we bought $100K six-cylinder cars...

When I was very young (3 or 4) my grandfather was a pilot for Pan Am. He flew very regularly to Europe and purchased a Gullwing on one of the trips. No serious money involved, it was just a used car at the time. He drove it for a few years and then sold it when his health failed. I had no real recollection of the car, only the family story that he had owned one.
A couple of years ago I was cleaning out some family pictures at my parents house and came across a snapsnot of my grandfather and the Gullwing. It was an ivory white car with a dark red (oxblood?) interior. As soon as I held the photo in my hand it was like a key unlocking a long closed door. I remembered crawling over the big sills and sitting down in the seat. I couldn't see over the dash, but I can tell you exactly how it smelled, the masculine combination of leather, cigars and my grandfather's cologne. That car sounded so wonderful and it was in my child's mind as fast and foreign as a spaceship. That is the only picture I have of my grandfather and the only picture I have of the car. Needless to say, the picture came home with me instead of being left at my parent's house. They are truly magnificent cars and more than 4 decades after my last ride in one, I am still in love with them. angela

We lived in Los Angeles (Hawthorne) when my grandfather sold the car, Paul. But that is just a day's drive away, isn't it? Would be a wonderful coincidence!

Angela, any chance you could scan that pic? (It might make me like you even more than I do now - you freakin' gearhead!)

Awsome car and video! I worked in a German car repair shop as a kid in Huntington Beach and my boss bought a 300SL roadster for $5000. It was in need of a lot of work but it was whole and it ran. I ate my lunch sitting in the car many times dreaming away
Fantastic machines!

Old guy? That's John Fitch. Part of the gullwing's history. An American, to boot. That's kind of like dismissing Stirling Moss as some old fart with a funny accent. ![]() Let me help you out here: Racing Safety - John Fitch Biography JR |
