Had just finished with the insurance paperwork, since I did most of the upgrading.
If the car is back, wouldn't that mean all the luck for this year is used up?

Was apparently some damage to car, broken tail light(reproduction, not Hella), damaged bumper, damaged end caps on bumper(unobtanium, think I may have spares in garage) Stole tool kit(unobtainium) jack, boot for convertible top(unobtanium), dinged fender. Shop is essentially off the hook completely, despite the fact that they keys were taken from there shop to steal the car, this is a fact. They will have to pay for the repairs and replacements.
Did some looking, reproductions available for all. Insurance allowed, $150 for $170 boot, $50 for $90 tool kit and jack, $6 for $30 end caps for bumper, looks like some phone calls in order.

Band.

So . . . .
In a situation like this, the shop is not on the hook for ANYTHING? Or, in a situation where the car is never found, the shop isn't on the hook for ANYTHING? That blows my mind, kind of.

As I understand it, the insurance company pays, then may or may not go after them to be reimbursed. I am a bit miffed that one of their employees either stole the car, or handed the keys to someone who stole the car and nobody goes to jail. If the car were found a month later intact without damage or theft, no apparent repurcussions. Not enough revenue in chasing car thieves for the gendarmes I suppose.

Tobra: Glad you got that nice car back. A colleague of mine had a nice vintage VW stolen in front of his office in SF many years ago. Reported it...blah blah...no action of course. A couple months later one of his employees spotted it in the Safeway parking lot just up the street. She called him, he called cops and they would not even come. Amazing ! The local cop shop was about five blocks away...

Tobra,
Get what you can from the insurance company and take the shop to small claims court for the rest. Or get with them and tell them that they are on the hook for the rest and tell them to cough up or you will take them to small claims court. Personally I would not accept reproductions of what needs replacing and would make them pay for the real thing.

I like the way you think Joe.
The fact that dear old Dad happens to be a law talkin' guy, would mean he could represent his lovin' spouse, and they end up having to hire an attorney, unless the owner of the shop does it himself.
